Black-Owned Bookstore in NOLA!
Baldwin & Co. coffee + bookstore is a cute cafe found 10 minutes from the French Quarter that my friend and her mom took me to during Mardi Gras.
I was having such a good time I forgot to take videos of my coffee and pastry. There’s such a huge selection of books, tons of space to work and hang out, and they play such good music.
They also donate books to adults and local schools in New Orleans trying to bring up literacy rates and empower the people of the Crescent City. A good space for education advocates and book lovers alike.
They host signings, storybook readings, givebacks and so many more events. Please check them out!
My visit to Baldwin & Co. in New Orleans was truly a delightful surprise during Mardi Gras, a perfect escape from the bustling streets of the French Quarter, being just a short 10-minute ride away. I was instantly drawn in by the warm, inviting atmosphere. You know how some places just feel right? This was one of them. Stepping inside, the aroma of fresh coffee mingled with the comforting scent of old and new books – a book lover's paradise! While I was so caught up in the moment that I completely forgot to snap pictures of my coffee and pastry, I can still vividly recall how delicious they were. I opted for a classic latte and a flaky croissant, both perfectly made. It’s definitely a spot where you can grab a quality brew and a tasty bite to fuel your reading or working session. The bookstore itself is magnificent. They boast an incredibly diverse and extensive collection of books across various genres. I spent a good amount of time just wandering the aisles, discovering new authors and beautifully designed covers. From fiction and non-fiction to poetry and children's books, there's truly something for everyone. It’s clear they curate their selection with thought and care, highlighting voices that are often underrepresented. The shelves are well-organized, making it a joy to browse without feeling overwhelmed. Beyond the books and coffee, the space itself is incredibly versatile. There are so many cozy nooks and spacious tables perfect for settling in with a new read, catching up on emails, or having a quiet chat with a friend. The natural light streaming in creates a bright yet relaxed ambiance, making it easy to spend hours there. And the music? Absolutely on point – a pleasant, eclectic mix that perfectly complements the calm and creative energy of the place without being distracting. What truly sets Baldwin & Co. apart, for me, is their profound commitment to the New Orleans community. Learning about their initiative to donate books to adults and local schools to boost literacy rates deeply resonated with me. In a city rich with culture but facing various challenges, empowering residents through education is incredibly impactful. They're not just selling books; they're actively investing in the future of the Crescent City. I heard they host a variety of events, from author signings and engaging storybook readings for kids to community givebacks and even workshops. It really feels like a vibrant hub for intellectual exchange and community building. If you're ever in New Orleans, especially if you're exploring the French Quarter, I cannot recommend making the short trip to Baldwin & Co. enough. It's an ideal spot for anyone looking for a unique cafe experience, a diverse book selection, a comfortable place to work, or simply to support a business that gives back meaningfully to its community. Don't forget to grab a coffee and spend some time getting lost in the stacks – you won't regret it!
