✨HOW I STARTED OIL PAINTING ✨

This is how I started with oil painting

🍋1. Trial and error: I started with a couple oil paints and started using them like acrylic and immediately knew this isn’t how to do it. I didn’t have any knowledge on oil paints.

🍋2. YouTube: after failing miserably I went on YouTube and googled how to use oil paint. There are many different types of oil paints, but I started with your classic oil paints and soon realized that there needs to be a medium to use oil paint you need oil to paint with oil paint!

🍋3. Experimenting: After I had gotten a couple oil paints, I went to the art supply store and purchased different types of oil mediums. This is pretty much to make your paint move (like butter) Also, it helps layer your paint, and depending on what type of medium you purchase your oil paint can dry faster or slower.

🍋4. Playing around with mediums: once I got the hang of it, I started to use different type of mediums there’s fast dry mediums and they’re slow drying mediums for example, Galkyd is considered a fast dry medium you can use it in an oil or a gel and it changes the consistency of the oil paint.

🍋5. Water based oil paint: water-based oil paint is exactly what it says. You can mix water with this type of paint. I don’t know the science behind it but once I found out about this, it changed the game for me. Water-based oil paint dries so much quicker than all of these it similarly acts like acrylic paint but still has the consistency of oil paint which I love.

🍋Summary: Start out with YouTube and ask all the questions on what you are looking to accomplish, then go to your local art supply store grab a couple primary colors (make sure you are looking at oil pain section) grab any medium start (I started with Linseed oil) with that, experiment with it when you feel comfortable with that go to a different medium and then choose what feels best for you! NOTE: Make sure you are also using oil paint brushes! Just remember the more you work with it the more comfortable you will get with it. Oil paint can be intimidating but at the end of the day, it’s just paint. Have fun!
