... Read moreIt's true, Fairy Glen on the Isle of Skye isn't just a destination, it's a BUCKETLIST Destination for a reason! When I planned my Scotland trip, this magical spot was at the very top of my must-see list, and it absolutely delivered. While my initial visit was breathtaking, I learned a few things that I wish I'd known beforehand to make the experience even smoother for fellow adventurers.
First off, getting there. Fairy Glen is located near Uig, and you'll typically drive. The roads on Skye can be narrow, so drive carefully! Parking can be a bit tricky, especially during peak season. There's a dedicated car park (usually paid, so have some cash or card ready), and it fills up fast. My advice? Go early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the biggest crowds and secure a spot. Trust me, experiencing the Glen with fewer people around truly enhances the otherworldly feeling.
Once you're there, you'll immediately understand why it's called Fairy Glen. The miniature landscape, with its conical hills, basalt columns, and lush greenery, feels like it’s straight out of a fairytale. Don’t just stick to the main path! There are smaller trails that wind through the hills, leading to hidden nooks and crannies. The most famous feature is 'Castle Ewen,' a prominent basalt column that looks like a ruined tower. It's a bit of a scramble to get up to it, but the views from the top are incredible – perfect for those panoramic shots you see all over Instagram.
Another unique aspect is the 'Fairy Circles' or 'Fairy Labyrinth.' These are concentric stone circles laid out by visitors over the years. While some debate their origin, they certainly add to the mystical vibe. You can walk the labyrinth yourself, adding to the meditative atmosphere.
What to Wear & Pack: This is crucial! Regardless of the forecast, the weather on the Isle of Skye can change in an instant. I highly recommend waterproof hiking boots. The paths can be uneven, muddy, and slippery, especially after rain (which is frequent!). Layers are your best friend – a waterproof jacket, a warm fleece, and comfortable walking trousers. Don't forget your camera for those stunning landscapes, and perhaps a small snack and water, as there are no facilities within the Glen itself.
Respecting the Land: Fairy Glen is a natural wonder, and it’s important to leave no trace. Pack out everything you pack in, stick to designated paths where possible, and avoid disturbing the natural formations or the fairy circles. It’s a delicate ecosystem, and we want to preserve its magic for future visitors.
My trip to Fairy Glen was a dream, and I hope these tips help you have an equally enchanting experience on your own Isle of Skye adventure!
