Why I started drawing cartoons For anatomy

I’m a visual learner, so memorizing anatomy terms straight from a textbook was not working for me. Everything felt dry and disconnected. So I started drawing cartoons, yes, actual cartoons, to help bring the terms to life.

Here’s exactly how I do it:

🧠 I pick one term or structure I’m stuck on (ex: “sartorius”).

✏️ I think of a character or scene that matches the word or function (the sartorius muscle is long and ribbon-like, so I drew it as a ballet dancer stretching across the thigh like a sash).

💬 I add little speech bubbles or silly labels — the more ridiculous, the better.

📓 I keep all my sketches in one notebook, and every time I revise, I remember the cartoon faster than the actual textbook diagram.

It might sound goofy, but turning anatomy into mini comic strips changed the game for me. I remember terms like “foramen magnum” because I drew it as a giant monster mouth at the base of the skull 😂

If you’re a med or bio student who struggles with dry memorization, give cartooning a try, even if you “can’t draw.” It’s more about making things memorable than making them pretty.
