Pumping at work
Hey pumping mamas! I know firsthand how challenging it can be to keep up with pumping at work. Today was another one of those days where I squeezed in a session, and honestly, getting 3 ounces on the left and 4 ounces on the right felt like a win! Every drop counts, right? It made me think about how often we should actually be pumping when we're back in the office, and how to make the whole 'breast pumping at work' routine as smooth as possible. When I first started, I was constantly asking myself, 'how often should I pump at work?' The general advice you hear is usually every 2-3 hours, mirroring how often your baby would typically feed. But let's be real, work schedules aren't always that flexible! What I've found is that consistency is key. Even if I can't hit that exact 2-3 hour mark every single time, I try my best to not go longer than 4 hours between sessions. Skipping pumps can definitely impact your supply, and nobody wants that! I usually aim for 2-3 pumping sessions during an 8-hour workday, depending on my meetings and workload. Sometimes, if my supply feels a bit low, I might even try a quick power pump during one session to encourage more output. Making 'pump and pour' a reality at work takes some planning. I always make sure my pump bag is packed the night before. This includes all my pump parts (I even keep a spare set at work just in case!), breast milk storage bags or bottles, a cooler bag with ice packs, and pump wipes for quick cleaning. Don't forget snacks and a big water bottle – staying hydrated is crucial for milk production! Finding a private and comfortable space is another big one. If your workplace has a dedicated lactation room, that's amazing! If not, don't be afraid to ask for a private office or even a conference room. I once had to pump in a supply closet, which definitely wasn't ideal, but you do what you gotta do! Communication with your manager and team about your pumping schedule can also make a huge difference. Blocking out time on my calendar as 'private' helps manage expectations and minimizes interruptions. One thing I've learned is that your output can vary. Some days I get more, some days less, just like today's 3 and 4 ounces. Don't let it discourage you! Stress can be a real supply killer, so try to relax during your sessions. Looking at a picture of my baby or watching a short, funny video helps me. And remember to properly store your milk. I always label my bags with the date and time, and then pop them into my cooler bag until I can get them into the fridge or freezer at home. The 'pump and pour' part at home is always satisfying, knowing I'm building up a stash for my little one. It’s definitely a journey, and some days are easier than others. But for all the pumping moms out there, know that you're doing an incredible job. Every ounce, every session, every effort counts. Don't forget to give yourself grace and celebrate those small wins. "That's all for now," but it's always enough. Keep going!
