Getting loose with the pitch back! #pitchingcoach #pitching #pitchingdrills #PitchingTips #SoftballPitcher
As a softball pitcher, warming up properly and maintaining flexibility are crucial for fluid pitching mechanics and injury prevention. One of my favorite drills to loosen up before a game or practice is the "pitch back" drill, which focuses on controlled arm movement and release timing. It helps build muscle memory and improves accuracy by replicating game-like pitching motions without full intensity. In addition to the pitch back drill, incorporating a variety of pitching drills such as shadow pitching, balance drills, and weighted ball throws can enhance control and velocity. For example, balance drills improve stability on the mound, which contributes to consistent release points. Weighted balls, when used properly, help increase arm strength and endurance. I also emphasize the importance of listening to your body during these drills. The phrase seen in the image OCR "HIT FUN STERI" can be interpreted as a reminder to "hit fun strictly," meaning to keep practice enjoyable while strictly focusing on form and fundamentals. Enjoying the process makes lessons stick and decreases stress. Lastly, work closely with your pitching coach to tailor drills to your individual needs. Coaches can identify subtle flaws in mechanics and recommend specific drills like the pitch back to address them. Consistency and patience in training will eventually translate into better performance in games.
