Every great pitcher starts somewhere.
The biggest mistake I see with beginners isn’t a lack of talent, it’s skipping the foundation. When you build the right mechanics from the start, everything else becomes so much easier later.
This is exactly why I created my Beginner Pitching Series. It walks parents and new pitchers through the fundamentals step by step so they can build confidence before bad habits take over.
Strong foundation first. Speed and advanced pitches can come later. 🥎❤️

Starting as a beginner in softball pitching can feel overwhelming, but focusing on the foundational mechanics truly makes all the difference. I've observed that many new pitchers rush to throw harder or attempt advanced pitches before mastering the basics, which often leads to bad habits and frustration down the line. From personal experience coaching youth softball, emphasizing proper grip, stance, balance, and arm motion early on fosters muscle memory that promotes better control and reduces injury risk. The key is patience and repetition to build confidence—something I highly recommend to all new pitchers and their parents. For beginners, it's important to remember that speed isn’t the priority initially. Instead, learning how to deliver consistent, accurate pitches sets the stage for future speed development. This approach aligns perfectly with the concept that "your beginner doesn't need to throw harder... they need this first." Incorporating drills that focus on footwork, posture, and release points can be very helpful. For example, stepping through the pitch slowly and practicing the throwing motion without a ball allows the pitcher to internalize the mechanics before adding complexity. Many parents find it helpful to break lessons into smaller, manageable sessions to keep young pitchers engaged and prevent overwhelm. Encouragement and celebrating small improvements go a long way toward maintaining motivation. Ultimately, a strong foundational approach not only improves immediate skill but also makes learning advanced techniques and increasing pitching speeds much easier and safer. Whether you’re a parent or a new player, investing time in these fundamentals will pay off greatly as the pitching journey progresses.
