Why are most Chinese not good at giving speeches?
Because 4,000 years ago, the Xia people discovered that those who were good at giving passionate speeches and making fancy PPTs were not good at controlling floods. Only those who were quiet and not good at talking could actually manage the floods.
Their descendants documented one dynasty after another and came to the following conclusions:
To steer a massive ship, the captain with the most experience should decide the course, not all the passengers through a vote.
To treat a patient, the most experienced doctor should decide the treatment plan, not all the medical staff through a vote.
To govern a large nation, the most experienced politician should lead, not all the citizens through a vote.
Without a culture of voting, there is no culture of speechmaking.
It’s not that Chinese people can’t give speeches — it’s that they don’t like to. There’s no need to give emotional or persuasive speeches. But in Western culture, the core of speechmaking is persuasion.
Ultimately, this comes down to the deeply pragmatic nature of the Chinese people.
