5 Classics by BIPOC Authors

My go to genres are usually sci-fi/fantasy and with some horror and mystery sprinkled in sometimes. So one of my goals this year is to read some classics. I chose 5 classics by authors of color for this goal:

Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston

Ceremony by Leslie Marmon Silko

Brown Girls, Brownstones by Paule Marshall

I Am a Cat by Natsume Sōseki

Things Fall Apart by China Achebe. I read this in highschool a loooong time ago and wanted to re-read it. I feel like I’ll have a different perspective on it than my younger self.

... Read moreLiterature by BIPOC authors plays a vital role in enriching the literary landscape, offering unique perspectives and experiences that resonate universally. Each of the selected classics is not just representative of their cultural roots but also transcends time, making them relevant for modern readers. 1. **Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston**: This seminal work focuses on the life of Janie Crawford, an African-American woman in the early 20th century. It explores themes of love, independence, and identity, showcasing Hurston's masterful use of dialect and her deep understanding of human emotion. 2. **Ceremony by Leslie Marmon Silko**: Silko bridges storytelling with the painful legacies of war and trauma experienced by Native Americans. The novel intertwines myth with modern existence, emphasizing the necessity of tradition in healing. 3. **Brown Girl, Brownstones by Paule Marshall**: This coming-of-age story captures the struggles of a young Barbadian girl in Brooklyn as she grapples with cultural expectations and personal ambition. Marshall's prose evokes a rich urban tapestry, reflecting the immigrant experience. 4. **I Am a Cat by Natsume Sōseki**: A critique of Japanese society through the eyes of an unnamed feline, this novel offers humor mixed with deep philosophical insights. Sōseki's observations of human nature remain transcendent and thought-provoking. 5. **Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe**: Widely regarded as one of the greatest African novels, Achebe's exploration of colonialism presents a poignant narrative of pre-colonial and colonial Nigeria. The protagonist Okonkwo's tragic story sheds light on the themes of tradition, change, and cultural conflict. These stories foster understanding and appreciation for diverse literary voices, making them essential reads for anyone looking to expand their literary horizons.
