Flaxseed Gel Recipe for Hair Growth & Retention

How I grew my hair 4 inches in 4 months using homemade flaxseed gel👇🏾

Pro tip: soak your whole flaxseeds overnight for an even silkier, more consistent gel.

🌿 INGREDIENTS

Base

• Purified water

• Whole golden flaxseed (soaked overnight)

Slip + Moisture

• Marshmallow root (cut & sifted)

• Slippery elm bark powder

Scalp Support

• Whole rosemary herb

🫧 HOW TO MAKE IT

1️⃣ Simmer marshmallow root + rosemary in water to create an herbal infusion

2️⃣ Add soaked flaxseeds and simmer until the gel becomes slightly stretchy

3️⃣ Turn off heat, then whisk in slippery elm

4️⃣ Strain while warm (yes, it’s a labor of love 😮‍💨)

This recipe yields about 5 oz of gel and lasts 6-8 days in the fridge.

✨ HOW I USE IT

• As a pre-poo mask on wash day

• Or as a styling gel

• I wash it out after 3–4 days to prevent flaking as it dries

Healthy hair comes from moisture + consistency, not just growth oils.

... Read moreFrom personal experience, incorporating a homemade flaxseed gel into your hair care routine can truly enhance hair growth and retention, especially when paired with consistent care. I found that soaking whole golden flaxseeds overnight is a game-changer; it produces a smoother, silkier gel that applies easily and evenly. The addition of marshmallow root and slippery elm bark powder is instrumental for providing extra slip and moisture, which helps reduce breakage during styling and detangling. Meanwhile, rosemary, known for its scalp-stimulating properties, supports a healthy environment for hair follicles to thrive. It’s important to use the gel not only as a styling aid but also as a pre-poo treatment before shampooing. Applying it beforehand seals in moisture and gently conditions the strands, minimizing dryness after wash day. One tip I always recommend is to avoid leaving the gel in for more than 3-4 days, as it can start to flake when it dries out. Washing it out regularly keeps the scalp clean and prevents buildup that could hinder growth. Long-term success with hair growth products like flaxseed gel comes from moisture retention and consistent routines rather than quick fixes. Maintaining a balanced hair regimen—including gentle cleansing, deep conditioning, and protective styling—complements homemade treatments and maximizes results. If you’re on a hair growth journey, this DIY flaxseed gel offers a natural, cost-effective solution to promote healthier, longer hair while supporting scalp health. Give it a try, and tailor the ingredients to what your hair responds to best for optimal benefits.
