Buddha wins the devil (translation of the first chapter)

Total meaning

The Lord of Muni has defeated the wicked, who has raised a great army with all kinds of weapons, riding on the elephants of Kirimeb, and with thousands of creating arms, with the power of majesty and virtue. Let that triumph be upon you.

On a quiet night, Prince Prithatthapha, who had forsaken the joy of the palace for many years, came and sat under the great Bodhi tree on the banks of the old Neranyan River, praying:

"If the way of suffering is not found, even if the flesh is dried up, we will not rise from this place."

He sat motionless like a great rock mountain under the stars that filled the sky.

But in another world, the Devil, who reigns over passions, is restless. He knows that if the prince of the right of enlightenment succeeds, many of the creatures of the earth will be freed from his power.

"No!" the devil roared. "We can't let him be enlightened!"

Suddenly, an army of monstrous demons is mobilized, the sound of battle drums ringing across the universe; giants, fiends, demons, and many demons move towards the Bodhi tree like a black storm devouring the horizon.

In the middle of the army, the devil sits on a giant elephant named Kirimeb, a great elephant that rises like a mountain, and every step shakes the earth.

When he arrived, the devil pointed his finger at the bodhisattva.

"Get up from that seat! This place is ours!"

Bodhisattva does not answer a single word.

The silence made the devil angry.

And the army of the devil began to attack, and the arrows came down from the sky as the rain, and spears, and swords, and axes, and countless churches were thrown at him, and some lifted up the whole mountain, to crush him.

But amazing things happened.

Every weapon that came near the Bodhisattva turned into a soft fragrant flower, floating down at his feet.

The sword becomes a lotus flower.

The spear became the steering wheel.

The arrows become petals.

Nothing can touch Him.

The devil is even more angry.

When the force is unbeatable, he uses tricks instead.

"What right do you have to sit on the throne of enlightenment?" he shouted, echoing. "Who will testify to you?"

And then the devil turned to the enormous army behind him.

Suddenly, the roar from the Sena Mara erupted.

"We are witnesses to the Devil!"

That sound echoed across the sky.

The Bodhisattva remained calm. He did not even argue.

Then he stretched out his right hand and touched the ground softly below.

"This land is a witness to us."

As soon as his hand touched the ground, the whole earth shook.

The earth roared like thunder.

According to legend, Our Lady Earth, who witnessed the merit that the Bodhisattva had accumulated over countless generations, appeared and testified that he had practiced, kept the precepts, and created goodness over many worlds.

When the truth appeared, the once mighty army of the devil began to fear.

The roar gradually fell silent.

The darkness that covered the earth began to fade.

The devil knew immediately that he had been defeated.

Not because of being hit by a more lethal weapon.

Not because of greater strength

But because it cannot overcome the purity, patience, and great prestige of the Bodhisattva.

Finally, the devil and all his army retreated into darkness.

Under the Bodhi tree, there was only a man sitting calm in the stars.

Throughout that night, he was so deeply focused that when the star appeared at dawn, he became enlightened as the Buddha Samma, who discovered the way of suffering himself.

And this is the victory that the first chapter mentions - a victory not of sword, spear, or war, but of all greed, anger, passion, and terror hidden in the hearts of animals.
