Foods that cause bloating 🍵

Typically, difficult foods to digest lead to excessive bloating and gassiness! It can also be caused by a food intolerance you don’t know about, or certain conditions you are unaware of like IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) or celiac disease.

Beans and lentils are seen as healthy foods but they contain an indigestible sugar which has to be broken down by bacteria in the intestines leading to more time being digested!

Hope this helps!!

... Read moreFeeling bloated can be such a drag, and like many of you, I've spent countless days wondering why my tummy feels like a balloon! The original post touched on some key culprits, but let's dive deeper into why certain foods and drinks might be causing you discomfort, and crucially, what you can do about it. We already know about beans and lentils with their indigestible sugars. If you love them but they cause issues, try soaking them overnight before cooking, or even sprouting them – this can break down some of those difficult compounds. For me, rinsing canned beans really well also makes a difference! What about dairy products? Items like Milk, Cheese, Yogurt, Cottage Cheese, Sour Cream, and even Ice cream are often problematic. Many people, including myself, discover they have some degree of lactose intolerance. Our bodies just don't produce enough of the enzyme lactase to break down the sugar in dairy. If you suspect this, trying lactose-free options or plant-based alternatives can be a game-changer. I swapped to almond milk, and my bloat significantly reduced! Then there are the carbohydrates. While whole grains like Whole Carbs and Pasta are generally healthy, their high fiber content can sometimes lead to bloating, especially if your body isn't used to it. It's about moderation and gradually increasing fiber intake if you're sensitive. Also, pay attention to ingredients; some processed carbs contain hidden bloat-inducing additives. And let's not forget the bubbly stuff! Carbonated Drinks, Soda, Sparkling Water, and even Alcohol are notorious for causing gas. The carbon dioxide gas gets trapped in your digestive system, leading to that uncomfortable swollen feeling. I've found that cutting down on my daily sparkling water habit made a noticeable difference. A query I see often is about fruit after meals. For some, eating fruit right after a heavy meal can cause bloating. This is because fruit digests faster than other foods. When it gets stuck behind slower-digesting proteins and fats, it can ferment in your gut, leading to gas. I personally try to eat fruit on an empty stomach or as a snack between meals, and it helps! Now, for the good news! What about anti-bloating foods and bloating remedies? It's not just about what to avoid, but also what to embrace. Ginger Tea: A warm cup of ginger tea can work wonders. Ginger has natural anti-inflammatory properties that calm the digestive tract. Peppermint: Peppermint capsules or tea can relax intestinal muscles, helping gas pass through more easily. Fennel Seeds: Chewing a few fennel seeds after a meal is an old trick for digestion and can reduce gas. Probiotics: Incorporating probiotic-rich foods like kefir or sauerkraut, or taking a quality probiotic supplement, can support a healthy gut microbiome, which is key to reducing bloating. Stay Hydrated: Sounds counterintuitive, but drinking plenty of water helps move things along and prevents constipation, a common cause of bloating. Mindful Eating: Slow down, chew your food thoroughly, and avoid talking while eating to prevent swallowing excess air. Specific Foods: Foods like cucumber, asparagus, and pineapple contain enzymes or properties that can aid digestion and reduce water retention. Remember, everyone's body is different. What causes bloating for one person might not for another. Keeping a food diary can be incredibly helpful in identifying your personal triggers. By being mindful of what you eat and drink, you can take control of your digestive comfort!

Cottage cheese and yogurt are still very healthy for your gut (as long as they have live cultures), but avoiding the others to decrease bloating is pretty good :) and lots of other things contribute to bloating like the amount of food, hydration, and if you walk after a meal or not. Hope this helps! 🫶🏼
