How I Built My Credit At 18 💳💸

United States
2024/8/9 Edited to

... Read moreI remember turning 18 and feeling a mix of excitement and a little bit of dread about adulting, especially when it came to finances. Everyone talks about building credit, but how do you actually do it when you have zero history? I decided to tackle it head-on, and honestly, reaching a 651 credit score pretty quickly felt like a huge win! It wasn't magic, but a series of small, consistent steps that anyone starting out can follow. My first big move was applying for a secured credit card. After some research, I went with the Discover It Secured Credit Card. This was a game-changer because it allowed me to build credit without needing a co-signer or existing credit history. You put down a deposit – for me, it was $200 – which acts as your credit limit. This deposit is usually refundable later on, which is a nice bonus. The key here, and something I learned pretty early, was to keep my credit utilization *super low*. The best advice I got was to aim for under 10% of my total credit limit. So, with a $200 limit, I made sure my purchases stayed around $20 each month. It sounds minimal, but consistently using a small amount and paying it off shows responsible behavior to credit bureaus. Then came the payment strategy, which honestly made all the difference. Instead of waiting for the due date and paying one lump sum, I started paying my bill in two halves. For example, if my small bill was $20, I'd pay $10 about two weeks before the due date, and then another $10 a week before. This might seem like overkill, but it helped me avoid late payments and also kept my utilization reported lower throughout the month, which is a credit score booster! It also forced me to be more mindful of my spending and budgeting. Once I had a good rhythm with my secured card, and my credit score started to climb, I looked into getting a second card. This time, I explored options like the Capital One Quicksilver. A second card can be beneficial because it increases your total available credit, which can further reduce your utilization ratio if you manage both responsibly. I decided to use my Discover card primarily for gas and my new Quicksilver card for recurring bills like my phone. Again, the 10% rule was my guiding principle for both cards. It’s all about showing that you can handle multiple lines of credit without overextending yourself. Another interesting strategy I used, which might not be for everyone but worked for me, was leasing items. I found out that some lease-to-own agreements, like those offered by Best Buy, can report your payments to credit bureaus. I opted for a 12-month lease-to-own agreement for something I genuinely needed, ensuring I was financially comfortable with the monthly payments, which for me was around $82.16. This added another positive payment history to my report, diversifying my credit mix slightly. Just a heads up, always make sure you understand the terms and that the lease company actually reports to credit bureaus before you commit! Building credit isn't a sprint; it's definitely a marathon. My biggest advice is to be patient, consistent, and always pay on time. Keep an eye on your credit report for any errors, and don't be afraid to start small. Those early steps really do add up to a solid foundation for your financial future. If I could go from zero to a 651 score at 18, you absolutely can too!
