「本多忠勝」で検索する人って、だいたい“どんな人物？何をした人？徳川家康との関係は？”が知りたいことが多い気がします。私も川越の時の鐘あたりを歩いている時にふと気になって、移動の合間にざっくり整理しました。 本多忠勝（ほんだ ただかつ）は、徳川家康を支えた家臣の中でも特に有名な“最強クラスの武将”として語られる人。戦場での武勇が伝説級で、「傷を負わなかった」「無敗」みたいな逸話がよく出てきます。もちろん誇張も混ざっているとは思うけど、それだけ当時の評価が高かったんだろうな…と。家康の天下取りを、現場で支えた実務派の猛将、というイメージで覚えると分かりやすいです。 じゃあ川越と直接つながるの？と聞かれると、私の体感では「川越＝本多忠勝」というより、“江戸（徳川）つながりで歴史を辿る中で一緒に気になるキーワード”という感じでした。川越は城下町として江戸時代の空気が濃いので、時の鐘や蔵造りの町並みを見ながら「徳川を支えた武将って誰がいたっけ？」と連想しやすいんですよね。 ちなみに、時の鐘周辺の歩き方としては、写真を撮りつつ鐘楼をぐるっと眺めて、時間が合えば鐘が鳴るタイミング（1日4回）を狙うのが良さそう。私はその日に音を聞けなくて残念だったので、次は“鳴る時間に合わせて到着”を目標にしています。 食べ歩きは、やっぱり「いわた 時の鐘店」の大学いもが強いです。カップに入っていて、蜜がしっかり絡んだお芋に黒ごまがたっぷり。歩きながらでも食べやすいし、ホテル滞在のおやつに持ち帰るのもアリ。お店の看板に大学いもパフェやフルーツアイスキャンディーも出ていて、暑い日はそっちも気になります。 お土産なら、時の鐘からすぐの「くらづくり本舗一番街」。福蔵（ふくぐら）が好きな人、意外と多いみたいで…“これが好き”って分かってる相手には迷わず選べて助かりました。店内で和菓子を見比べる時間も楽しいです。 最後に、ぱんだんご。見た目が可愛いから完全に観光テンションで買ったけど、ちょっとした休憩のおやつにちょうど良かったです。 「本多忠勝」を調べる目的で来たわけじゃなくても、川越みたいな歴史エリアを歩くと急に気になる人物が出てくるので、スマホで軽く調べながら散策すると面白さが増えます。次は喜多院方面も含めて、もう少し“江戸・徳川の流れ”を意識して歩いてみたいです。
