Should I stop lending her any more money?

My sister is terrible with money. She’s got a solid job but she’s always spending more than she makes. Over two years, I’ve lent her money so many times. Every single time, she swears she’ll pay me back by a date then blows it by weeks, sometimes months. I have to text her, just to get her to follow through. And she gets mad saying I’m pushy.

She finally pays but it’s always a hassle that drains me. Yesterday, she hit me up for $1500, said she owed for the rent. I said no and told her her constant late payments broke my trust, and I can’t keep being her safety net. She needs to learn to budget for the stuff she wants.

She flipped out and called me selfish, a bad sister for letting her struggle. My mom even rang me up, saying I should help her to keep family from fighting. I can afford the $1500 but I’m so tired of this. Wanting her to be reliable shouldn’t be too much, right?

... Read moreIt’s really tough when you’re trying to support a loved one, like your sister, but her financial habits cause repeated stress and distrust. From what you’ve shared, your sister has solid income but poor spending habits, leading her to depend on you as a financial safety net. That situation puts you in a hard spot emotionally and financially. One important aspect is setting and maintaining boundaries around lending money. When people continuously miss repayment deadlines and get defensive when reminded, like your sister does, it signals a deeper issue. It could be a lack of financial literacy or difficulty prioritizing bills and debts. Encouraging your sister to create a budget could help her control spending and plan ahead for rent and other essentials. You mentioned she owed $1500 for rent—this is a significant amount, especially with repeated borrowing over two years. It’s understandable to feel drained and reluctant to keep bailing her out. While your mom’s wish to avoid family conflict is valid, your own financial well-being and mental health should not be compromised. Sometimes, tough love is necessary to motivate change. Explaining clearly that you cannot continue lending money until she shows financial responsibility may push her to seek solutions like financial counseling or budgeting apps. Also, consider suggesting alternatives for her to manage cash flow, such as negotiating payment plans with landlords or using community support resources. Supporting her emotionally without enabling harmful financial reliance can be balanced by encouraging accountability. Remember, trust is a two-way street. Regular late repayments and avoidance of repayment responsibility erode that trust, making it harder to maintain close family ties. It’s okay to say no and prioritize your own stability. Your hope that wanting her to be reliable is reasonable is valid—everyone deserves to expect dependable financial interactions. Overall, this situation highlights the importance of clear communication, firm boundaries, and encouraging positive financial habits when dealing with family money drama.

They always use the "selfish" to try to guilt people into going against their better judgment. Did she waste away her whole rent? I think not.If so, then do not be as foolish as she was.
