“Are you sure you’re not pregnant?”

I’ve got a huge tumor in my abdomen and pelvis. Since I’m pretty slim, it’s super noticeable. I’d already had a biopsy but they sent me for a CT scan to check if it spread to my chest.

If you’ve ever had a CT scan, you know the drill with endless boxes to tick including confirming you’re not pregnant (radiation’s dangerous for babies). So I filled everything out.

I laid on the table and the doctor stared at my face, then my belly, then his papers... I’m thinking: “Please don’t ask, It’s right there in the notes!” But he did: “Are you sure you’re not pregnant?” I said: “It’s a tumor.” His face went pure horror and he apologized a million times. I burst out laughing and felt terrible, so I apologized too.

That poor guy’ll never forget me. Now strangers keep assuming I’m pregnant. And if something feels off, please go see a doctor ASAP.

... Read moreHaving a large tumor in the abdomen and pelvis can profoundly affect daily life, especially if you have a slim body where such changes are more noticeable. Many people face confusion from others who might assume pregnancy when they see a visibly enlarged belly, as shared by the story where strangers mistakenly think the tumor is a baby bump. One particularly revealing moment happens during medical procedures like CT scans, which require strict protocols due to radiation risks. CT scans are a common imaging method used to evaluate the size, location, and possible spread of tumors. Before the scan, patients must complete detailed forms, including confirming pregnancy status because radiation exposure can harm a developing fetus. This step, though routine, can sometimes prompt awkward or uncomfortable questions, as medical staff need confirmation to proceed safely. Despite medical notes indicating the presence of a tumor, healthcare providers may still ask to confirm that the patient isn't pregnant, reflecting the high caution needed during radiologic procedures. Beyond the medical experience, living with a tumor that significantly changes one’s appearance often leads to social misunderstandings. The OCR-recognized phrase “Strangers think I'm pregnant but it's a tumor” encapsulates how visible changes can lead to unwanted assumptions. This can be emotional, but it’s important to focus on health and treatment instead of others’ speculation. If you or someone you know notices unusual bodily changes such as swelling or lumps, seeking prompt medical advice is essential. Early diagnosis through biopsies, imaging like CT scans, and professional guidance can lead to appropriate treatment plans. Aside from the physical challenges, emotional support from friends, family, or patient communities can help navigate the stress and social stigma. In summary, this story highlights not only the medical but also the emotional and social layers of living with a large tumor. It stresses the importance of thorough medical evaluations including pregnancy checks during CT scans, clear communication between patients and healthcare staff, and the encouragement to consult a doctor without delay if you feel something is off. Understanding these experiences can foster empathy and awareness about conditions that may not be immediately visible or understood by others.
