Let’s talk about it🗣️

Whether you experience poverty as a child or an adult, it’s something that sticks with you. Knowing what it’s like to be without makes you desperate to hold onto whatever fortune or success you receive. You live in a constant state of anxiety that you can lose it all and go back. It’s unfortunately something I struggle with, no matter how much money I make. Does anyone else relate?#adulthoodstruggles #poverty #mentalhealing #childhoodtrauma

... Read moreThe trauma of experiencing poverty often endures long after financial circumstances improve. Many individuals who have overcome poverty report a lingering fear of losing their newfound stability, resulting in chronic anxiety and stress. This emotional turmoil can be rooted in childhood experiences, where scarcity and hardship shape one’s worldview and response to success. The phrase from the image, "No one talks about the trauma that comes with poverty even after you've come out of it," highlights the silent struggle many face. Understanding this psychological impact is crucial for mental healing. Individuals may develop hypervigilance about finances and opportunities, often feeling desperation to hold onto their fortune. This mindset is linked with adulthood struggles, as financial insecurity leaves lasting scars on mental health. Healing involves addressing childhood trauma, recognizing the emotional patterns formed during poverty, and seeking supportive environments where vulnerability is accepted. Moreover, community resources, therapy, and open conversations about poverty’s psychological effects can foster resilience. Recognizing the invisible wounds of poverty is the first step toward compassionate support and sustainable mental health recovery. This comprehensive approach benefits not only individuals but also society by breaking cycles of trauma tied to economic hardship.

You are not alone, I do, too. It got worse after my husband became disabled and was forced to retire. Our insurance was canceled 30 days from his last day. We blew through the little savings we had for his medical equipment. We lost our home, car and everything's except a trash bag full of clothes. We had to be where we could use electricity because he was on oxygen 24/7/365, so we stayed in crime infested cheap motels. We ate so much cheap mac and cheese until I can't even eat pasta anything anymore. I saw people OD and tried to give them first aid until the paramedics came, one too many times. Between the loss, not enough to eat, not enough to get what we needed, and watching young people die needlessly, it took a heavy toll on mental and physical health. I would cry in the shower and cry after my husband and granddaughter that we raised went to sleep. I just wanted to go to sleep and not wake up, but I knew that I had to keep going because they needed me. I prayed and would ask God for a sign, a word, or something to help me keep going, and he always did. God is the only one who brought us through that. Fast forward 3 years and we now have a nice home of our own, God did it! Yet, I still haven't been able to enjoy it. I think about the what ifs, and I know that does not help. I struggle with things like saving all the glass jars so we can, can foods. I take clothes apart and redesign them to use them as long as possible. I save everything, because I might need it. I am starting therapy with a counselor at our church. I want to be free from the trauma. I also realized that our bodies react badly to the trauma we go through. It certainly explains some things that I have going on physically and why the medication doesn't help and the doctors haven't helped. I think I need a deep spiritual healing that only God can do, if I give it to him. But, first, I have to dig it up bit by bit and feel the feelings, name them, and put them in their proper place.
