Why are some people against making friends at work

I’m young and have JUST started out in the corporate world. So I’m here for an open discussion to be honest ☺️ I admit that there may be things I don’t know yet.

Of course everyone can approach work and friendships however they feel comfortable. I’m not telling anyone how to live. I’m honestly just asking. I’ve just seen so many comments being against making any friends at work that I wanted to know more about the mentality there, cause while I agree with some points, I also think that eventually, over a longer period of time, you can end up forming some pretty deep friendships with the people you work with? Cause of the shared immediate context - conversation and laughter can just be so easy initially. And eventually I think one could end up with a stronger bond. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that?

... Read moreWorkplace friendships can be a double-edged sword. While some believe that forming close bonds with colleagues enhances teamwork and morale, others see it as a potential distraction that might lead to bias and complications. Many workers fear that mixing personal and professional relationships could lead to conflicts or misunderstandings. A notable observation is the common sentiment against the corporate 'family' culture, where employees might feel pressured to maintain seemingly genuine relationships that are more transactional in nature. To understand the root of these concerns, consider the unique dynamics of workplace relationships compared to friendships outside work. Colleagues share not just physical space but also the pressure of deadlines and shared goals. This environment can create a strong basis for camaraderie, but it can also lead to competition and jealousy. Thus, how one navigates these relationships often depends on personal values and previous experiences. From one perspective, fostering friendships at work can yield benefits such as increased collaboration and a more enjoyable work atmosphere, where employees feel more motivated and supported. Conversely, some prefer to maintain a clear psychological boundary, viewing work purely as a professional venture. This notion doesn't necessarily indicate a lack of sociability but rather a desire for maintaining personal boundaries. Ultimately, the choice of whether or not to make friends at work is deeply personal, shaped by individual experiences and workplace culture. Engaging in open discussions, like the one initiated in this article, can greatly enhance understanding among employees about the varying approaches to workplace relationships and the reasoning behind them.

I think some people feel like mixing work and friendship can blur boundaries or cause drama, but it really depends on the people involved.

I never talked to anyone at my job. Me talking to a coworker doesn’t get me paid or benefit me in anyway. It doesn’t interest be to be seen and I’m not pressed to be in anybody’s face so I never did. If a person speaks, I’ll speak back but don’t start a conversation because I will walk off. I have friends already
