Let’s talk paid time off because here in the U.S., it’s basically a joke. Most companies barely dish out 2 weeks a year, if that. But my situation is kinda good? I get around 35 paid vacation days annually.
Breakdown time: 20 days are mandatory by law (bless that), 12 extra come from my 40-hour workweek contract (since the standard here is 38 hours). Plus, the company gives a bonus day every 3 years for tenure. I’ve been here 4 years, so that’s 2 more days in the bank.
On top of that, we get December 24th and 31st off automatically (no using PTO for those!), and if a bank holiday falls on a weekend? We get a “makeup day” to use whenever. It still blows my mind how different it is from the U.S. norm, where people guilt trip themselves for taking a single day off. How many paid vacation days do you get per year? And do you actually feel comfortable using them all?
