Here in the states, it's basically a joke...

Let’s talk paid time off because here in the U.S., it’s basically a joke. Most companies barely dish out 2 weeks a year, if that. But my situation is kinda good? I get around 35 paid vacation days annually.

Breakdown time: 20 days are mandatory by law (bless that), 12 extra come from my 40-hour workweek contract (since the standard here is 38 hours). Plus, the company gives a bonus day every 3 years for tenure. I’ve been here 4 years, so that’s 2 more days in the bank.

On top of that, we get December 24th and 31st off automatically (no using PTO for those!), and if a bank holiday falls on a weekend? We get a “makeup day” to use whenever. It still blows my mind how different it is from the U.S. norm, where people guilt trip themselves for taking a single day off. How many paid vacation days do you get per year? And do you actually feel comfortable using them all?

2025/11/27 Edited to

... Read morePaid time off (PTO) is a crucial factor in work-life balance, yet in the U.S., it’s often seen as insufficient compared to other countries. While the federal government does not mandate paid vacation days, many employers provide around 10 to 15 days per year, which can feel restrictive for employees wanting to recharge. The case of receiving 35 paid vacation days per year is quite uncommon but demonstrates that better PTO can be achieved through contract agreements and company culture. Typically, U.S. companies enforce around two weeks of paid vacation, but some progressive employers may offer more, especially for longer tenure. Mandatory paid leave, such as the 20 days referenced in the original post, is not standard in the U.S. federal law but might be in specific states or countries. Additional perks, like receiving extra days off if holidays fall on weekends or having bank holidays automatically off without using PTO, can significantly enhance workers’ satisfaction and reduce burnout. Cultural attitudes also play a significant role. In the U.S., employees often feel guilty about taking days off due to workplace pressure or fear of falling behind, which can lead to underutilization of PTO benefits. Contrastingly, cultures valuing time off encourage employees to fully use their vacation days, resulting in better overall wellbeing. If you find yourself restricted in using PTO, consider discussing flexible work arrangements or additional leave options with your employer. Advocating for better paid leave policies can contribute to a healthier workplace and improve retention. Overall, paid vacation days should be viewed as essential for productivity and mental health. Employees and employers alike benefit when generous, flexible PTO policies are embraced and utilized comfortably.

Some of my favorite stores are: 💎 Barnesville Antique Mall – The staff is so helpful and friendly. They have great glassware at amazing prices! 💎 Heart of Ohio Antique Center – This store is BIG. I always walk out with a few unique, hard-to-find items. They also have a lot of high-end antiques.
