Packing For Worldschooling Slow Travel
Packing light with kids might sound impossible—but it’s actually made our travels so much easier. ✈️
Our golden rules:
🧳 Use packing cubes—each kid gets their own and they carry it (instant toy limit).
📚 Skip heavy books—hello, online libraries.
👕 Pack way fewer clothes than you think you need (laundry is your friend).
Where I don’t cut corners:
🦺 Safety gear that’s hard to find at our destination (like life jackets).
🌿 Herbal remedies, supplements, and any medications we rely on.
🎲 Our favorite learning games—they’re worth the space every time.
Light bags = less stress, more freedom, and a lot more fun. 💛. Find my FREE Travel With KIDS Guide at Stan.store/wanderlearncollective

So, you're getting ready for an incredible adventure: studying abroad! It’s such an exciting time, but one of the biggest challenges is often figuring out what to pack. As someone who’s constantly packing and unpacking for our family's worldschooling journeys, I've learned a ton about traveling light and smart – and many of these principles apply perfectly to your study abroad experience. You want to make the most of your time there, not be weighed down by excessive luggage! First things first, let's talk clothes. Just like with our kids, you'll need way less than you think. Focus on versatile, comfortable pieces that can be layered. Think neutral colors that mix and match easily. Unless you're going somewhere extremely remote, laundry facilities will be available, so plan for washing clothes every week or two. I always recommend using packing cubes; they are an absolute game-changer for organizing your wardrobe and making sure everything fits efficiently. This also helps you avoid overpacking by clearly defining how much space you have. When it comes to academics, embrace the digital age! Just as we rely on online libraries like Libby for our kids' schooling, you can do the same for your textbooks and readings. A lightweight laptop or tablet, along with a universal power adapter and a portable charger, will be your best friends. Leave heavy physical books at home unless absolutely necessary for a specific course. Health and wellness are paramount. Beyond your essential prescriptions, consider bringing a small first-aid kit with basics like pain relievers, band-aids, and any herbal remedies or supplements you regularly use and might find difficult to source immediately abroad. Always carry copies of your prescriptions and a letter from your doctor if you have specific medications. This foresight can save you a lot of hassle. Don't forget the practicalities! Secure digital copies of all important documents – passport, visa, flight tickets, insurance, accommodation details, and university acceptance letters – and keep them on a cloud service and an external drive. Carry a few passport-sized photos for local applications. For money, a combination of a credit card, a debit card, and a small amount of local currency is usually best. Make sure your banks know you're traveling! Finally, think about comfort and connection. While we bring learning games for our kids, you might want to pack a small journal, a few photos of loved ones, or a tiny, meaningful keepsake. These small personal touches can make your new environment feel more like home. Consider a compact, foldable reusable shopping bag, and maybe a small, lightweight water bottle. And just like we prioritize safety gear that's hard to find, think about your personal safety. This might mean having a good quality lock for your backpack, knowing local emergency numbers, and understanding the cultural norms of your destination. My biggest tip for anyone studying abroad is to pack with intention. Every item should serve a purpose. You’ll inevitably buy things when you get there, so leave some space in your luggage. Packing light means more freedom to explore, less stress from lugging heavy bags, and a smoother transition into your new life abroad. Good luck with your studies!
