Don’t do it, girl #autism #stimming #autismmom #asd #neurodivergent
When someone tells an autistic person to stop stimming, it can often feel invalidating and harmful. Having witnessed my own experiences and heard from many in the autism community, I want to emphasize that stimming is not just a quirky behavior—it’s a crucial way autistic individuals manage overwhelming sensory input and emotions. Stimming can take many forms, like hand-flapping, rocking, or repeating sounds, and serves as a coping mechanism to help maintain focus, reduce anxiety, and process the world around them. Telling a child to stop stimming without understanding its purpose can increase stress and reduce their ability to self-soothe. A helpful perspective is to distinguish between stimming that is safe and functional versus behaviors that might cause harm or interference with daily life. For example, gently redirecting dangerous stimming is okay, but outright banning all stimming overlooks its importance. Many autism moms and caregivers find value in creating supportive environments where their children can stim freely without judgment. This acceptance promotes self-esteem and neurodivergent pride. Educating teachers, peers, and family members about stimming fosters empathy and reduces stigma. From personal experience, embracing stimming as part of an autistic person’s identity makes a significant positive difference. It’s about listening to the needs behind the behavior rather than silencing it. Our goal should always be to help autistic individuals thrive authentically and comfortably in their unique ways.
