A team of researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences developed a new type of sodium-ion battery that clearly uses a different concept, its heart is a special type of non-flammable electrolyte, and it can "change its own state" when the temperature rises, rather than just delaying the fire like a normal battery.

When the temperature inside the battery exceeds about 150 degrees Celsius, the electrolyte instantly changes from a liquid to a solid structure, becoming like a barrier inside the cell, separating the ongoing reaction, resulting in heat failing to spread, and stopping the dangerous cycle from the beginning.

The test results were considered highly interesting. The 3.5Ah battery was tested in extreme circumstances, both penetrating the cell and heating up to 300 degrees Celsius, but no smoke, no fire and no explosion were found, which meant that the "thermal cycle cutting" mechanism actually worked, not just in theory.

Equally important is that this increase in safety is not exchangeable for efficiency. The battery can also operate over a wide temperature range from -40 to 60 degrees Celsius, support high pressure and have an energy density of 211 Wh / kg, which starts to approach the practical lithium batteries on the market.

Behind this technology is linked to HiNa Battery, which develops sodium batteries in China, and is driving industrial applications. According to data from testing sodium trucks, it reduces energy consumption per distance and increases runtime by about 20%. In some conditions, this reflects that batteries no longer stop in the lab.

Another key variable is "cost," which is at the heart of competition in the EV world. Batsodium currently also costs slightly more than lithium, but the trend is changing rapidly. Developers expect the cost of both technologies.

It will meet in 2027 and begin full competition in 2028, at which point a "safer" and "equally costly" battery could immediately become the main choice.

At the same time, automakers are starting to move, such as BAIC developing sodium batteries that can charge ten minutes at a core speed, and remain stable in extreme weather conditions; these are saying that battery sodium ecosystems are gradually forming, not just single technologies.

All this has led the picture of the future metro to shift from the one that people admit is "good, but also vulnerable," to a world where batteries are designed to be "unadvanced" since the internal structure 🤩🤩.
