Parasympathetic isn’t always necessarily good

2/9 Edited to

... Read moreIn my experience working with holistic health, I've seen many people assume that activating the parasympathetic nervous system—our so-called "rest and digest" mode—is always beneficial. However, this isn’t necessarily true in every situation. For example, when the body's systems are overwhelmed or under significant stress, pushing into a parasympathetic state too quickly can actually cause discomfort or a worsening of symptoms temporarily. This can feel like slowing down makes you feel worse rather than better. It's important to recognize that the body's autonomic nervous system requires a delicate balance between sympathetic (fight or flight) and parasympathetic activity. Both have vital roles depending on the context. Forced attempts to induce calm without addressing root issues can sometimes lead to a state of collapse or shutdown, which is not what we want. From my practice, I've learned that regulation is about creating safety first, not about forcing a particular state like calm or relaxation. Safety cues from the environment and the body itself are fundamental to allowing the nervous system to settle appropriately. Moreover, achieving balance means fostering resilience so the body can flexibly shift between sympathetic and parasympathetic responses as needed rather than getting stuck in one. Ultimately, understanding that parasympathetic activation is not a one-size-fits-all solution empowers us to use more nuanced approaches in wellness, whether through breathwork, therapy, or lifestyle changes. Instead of forcing calm, it's about supporting the body's capacity to engage rest and repair when it truly can, avoiding the pitfalls of overwhelm and stuck states. This awareness helps pave the way toward holistic healing and better regulation of our nervous system responses.

For many neurodivergent people, stimming is a natural way the brain regulates itself. It can help release energy, manage emotions, process sensory input, and maintain focus. But too often, stimming gets misunderstood. A child tapping their foot, rocking, repeating words, or fidgeting isn’t ne

Why Days On Market Isn’t Necessarily A Bad Thing
