Like many small dog owners, I initially thought trick training was reserved for larger breeds, but my kids recently started teaching our Yorkies to jump through a hula hoop, and it's been an absolute blast and incredibly rewarding. Yorkies are much smarter and more eager to please than their tiny size might suggest, making them fantastic candidates for learning all sorts of cool behaviors. A bored Yorkie can sometimes develop mischievous habits, so channeling their energy into learning new tricks keeps them engaged and happy. Plus, it's a fantastic way to reinforce basic obedience commands in a fun, positive way. Essential Yorkie Training Methods and Tips When training your Yorkie, consistency and positive reinforcement are key. Keep sessions short (5-10 minutes) and fun to maintain their attention. Always reward good behavior immediately with high-value treats, praise, or their favorite toy. Patience is your best friend when training any dog, especially when they're learning something new. Easy Tricks to Start With Your Yorkie "Sit" and "Stay": These are fundamental and build a great foundation for more advanced tricks. Once they've mastered these, you'll find other tricks much easier to teach. "Paw" or "Shake": Hold a treat near your Yorkie's nose, then move it slightly away and down, encouraging them to lift their paw to reach it. As they lift it, gently take their paw, say "Paw!" (or "Shake!"), and reward them. "Spin": With a treat in your hand, lure your Yorkie to turn in a circle. As they complete the turn, say "Spin!" and reward. Here's how we've been doing it: Step 1: Introduce the Hoop: Start by placing the hula hoop flat on the ground. Lure your Yorkie across it with a treat, saying "Through!" or "Jump!". Reward them when they step through. Step 2: Raise it Slightly: Once they're comfortable stepping through, lift the hula hoop just a few inches off the ground. Continue luring them through and rewarding them. The key is to make it seem like a fun game, not a chore. Step 3: Gradually Increase Height: Slowly raise the hula hoop higher, always ensuring it's a comfortable jump for your Yorkie. Never force them. Keep your tone encouraging and excited. The goal is for them to associate the command and the action with a positive experience. Step 4: Fade the Lure: Once your Yorkie understands the motion, start using the verbal command and a hand signal (e.g., pointing through the hoop) without the treat lure. Reward them after they've jumped. Remember, every Yorkie learns at their own pace. What works for one might need slight adjustments for another.
