DAY 15: HUASHAN

Probably my new favourite day of the trip so far! Mount Hua, not to be confused with the similar looking and sounding Mount Huang, is just an hour out of Xi’an and definitely worth a visit. Make sure to not miss the plank walk either!

I’m traveling to all seven wonders of the world without flying and you don’t wanna miss out.

... Read moreMount Hua, or Huashan, offers one of the most exhilarating hiking experiences in China, especially for those looking to combine natural beauty with a thrilling physical challenge. From my experience, the hike not only tests endurance and courage but provides breathtaking panoramic views that reward every step taken. The famous plank walk, a suspended narrow walkway along a sheer cliff face, is definitely something not to miss. It’s a unique experience where safety harnesses are provided, and locals commonly assist first-timers with instructions, making the adventure both secure and exciting. The trek up Mount Hua involves navigating steep and sometimes narrow paths, so comfortable hiking shoes and a good level of fitness are essential. I recommend setting out early in the morning to avoid crowds and to catch the stunning sunrise from one of the mountain’s peaks, which is an unforgettable sight. Besides the physical adventure, Mount Hua has rich cultural and historical significance as part of Chinese heritage, often associated with Taoism and ancient legends. Walking the trails, you’ll encounter ancient temples and inscriptions that add a mystical touch to the journey. Traveling without flying across the seven wonders, including this day trip, has deepened my appreciation for overland travel and the diverse landscapes of China. I’ve found that meeting locals and learning the lore behind each site adds layers of meaning to what you see, making each stop more than just a photo opportunity. If you’re planning to visit, budget around $30 for entry fees and transportation from Xi’an, which is affordable considering the once-in-a-lifetime experience. Carry plenty of water, snacks, and prepare for changing weather conditions. Lastly, document your adventure—you’ll want to remember the moment you took on the world’s most famous plank walk and stood atop one of China’s most revered mountains.
