DAY 28: INTO MONGOLIA 🇲🇳
I crossed the border with absolutely no plan, and when I found out the train to Ulaanbaatar was only 8 hours later, I decided to hitchhike. It was surprisingly easy and within 5 minutes I had a ride across the entire Gobi Desert.
I’m traveling to all seven wonders of the world without flying and you don’t wanna miss out.

Traveling overland into Mongolia offers an unforgettable experience, especially when crossing the iconic Gobi Desert. I can relate to the thrill of having no fixed plan and deciding on the spot to hitchhike across this expansive, arid wonder. The Gobi Desert, stretching over 1.3 million square kilometers, is known not only for its harsh climate but also for its unique wildlife and stunning landscapes that range from sand dunes to rocky outcrops. Hitchhiking in Mongolia can be surprisingly straightforward, as locals are often friendly and willing to help travelers, especially when routes are along major roads or near towns. Since the driving side in Mongolia is left-hand, it can take some adjustment when catching a ride, but the welcoming nature of Mongolian drivers makes the journey memorable and safe. Traveling overland by hitchhiking allows you to absorb local culture intimately—often sharing stories and gaining insights that buses or trains won’t provide. During my own overland trips, I found that patience and open communication are key. Using simple phrases or translation apps can help break down language barriers, and having a good map or GPS ensures you’re headed in the right direction despite the spontaneous nature of hitchhiking. What makes this adventure even more inspiring is the overarching goal of visiting the seven wonders of the world without flying. This mode of travel not only reduces environmental impact but also enriches the journey with unexpected encounters and deep immersion. If you plan to travel similarly, consider the timing of train schedules or buses nearby, as this knowledge could serve as a backup option when hitchhiking opportunities are limited. Also, be prepared with essentials like water, snacks, and proper clothing for desert conditions. The long stretches across the desert can be challenging but extremely rewarding once you reach destinations like Ulaanbaatar, the vibrant capital of Mongolia, full of cultural landmarks and welcoming locals. From my personal experience, embracing flexibility and the unknown is what makes overland adventures like this so fulfilling. Each leg of the trip brings new stories—whether it’s the moment you get picked up within minutes or the fascinating conversations along the way. It’s an empowering way to connect deeply with the places and people encountered on the journey to the seven wonders.
