Damaged skin barrier? Keep it simple and boring for a couple weeks 👏🏼
As a derm PA, this is exactly what I do when my skin is irritated, dry, burning, sensitive, or breaking out from overdoing actives. Strip your routine ALL the way back to basics.
✨ Gentle cleanser only — I love the Prequel Gleanser because it cleans without making my skin feel tight or stripped.
✨ Skip the actives — no benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, retinoids, exfoliating acids, etc. Your skin needs a break.
✨ Lightweight hydration first — I either use a hyaluronic acid serum or the Prequel Half & Half Lightweight Moisturizer as my first layer. No fancy toners or unnecessary steps.
✨ Then seal it in with a thicker moisturizer — lately I’ve been loving the Innisfree Green Tea Ceramide Cream because it helps calm, soothe, and support my skin after I’ve overdone harsher products.
✨ And finally… Aquaphor 🫶🏼 I use a thin layer at night to lock everything in, prevent water loss, and help my skin wake up feeling hydrated and less irritated.
The biggest thing with repairing a damaged skin barrier is patience. Cut out the fun serums and “extra” products for a bit and focus on hydration + barrier repair first.
... Read moreFrom personal experience, when my skin barrier is compromised, the most important step is to drastically reduce the complexity of my skincare routine. I’ve found that using a gentle, glycerin-based cleanser with a balanced pH, such as the Prequel Cleanser, prevents further dryness and irritation without stripping natural oils. Skipping all actives like benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, and retinoids for a few weeks allows my skin to calm down and start healing.
For hydration, layering works well: starting with a hyaluronic acid serum or a lightweight moisturizer like Prequel’s Half & Half Moisturizer helps attract moisture into the skin. Then applying a richer cream containing ceramides, peptides, and soothing ingredients such as colloidal oatmeal—as found in the Innisfree Green Tea Ceramide Cream—strengthens the skin’s barrier and reduces inflammation.
As a final step in the evening, I swear by Aquaphor Healing Ointment. Its petrolatum-based formula seals in moisture effectively and prevents transepidermal water loss, which is crucial for barrier repair in irritated, dry, or cracked skin. I apply just a thin layer at night, and I wake up with skin feeling softer and less reactive.
Patience is key. While it’s tempting to use exciting serums and exfoliants, giving your skin time to recover by focusing on hydration and barrier repair products is essential. Avoiding unnecessary ingredients and fragrance-free options reduces the risk of further irritation and supports natural skin renewal.
Lastly, always listen to your skin. If irritation persists beyond a few weeks, consulting a dermatologist or dermatology PA can provide personalized advice or treatments. Healing a damaged skin barrier is gradual but achievable with consistent, gentle care.
I loved using the Prequel Half and Half but it started to dry me out leaving me with dry patches within a couple days of using it. Would you know why? I could never figure it out.
