I tried the new holiday Starbucks Cran-Merry Refresher today, I did not like it at all.
I also tried the Gingerbread Oatmilk Chai Latte, also gross.
I will add more drinks as I try them!
⭐️Cran-Merry Refresher rating: 1/5
- I ordered a Tall with a spalsh of green tea and I’m more shocked because it is definitely so much worse without the green tea.
- The inclusions are so nasty OMG. If you MUST try to see for yourself either get a straw or order without inclusions to save yourself.
- I really wanted to like it but nope.
⭐️Gingerbread Chai rating: 2/5
- I don’t actually like Starbucks chai but I LOVED the pumpkin cream so I was like maybe they make the special flavors different than the regular ones. I was wrong this was gross as well.
- Starbucks chai just has a weird aftertaste of sorts
- I didn’t taste like gingerbread, just cinnamon
- However if you like Starbucks chai, you may like it
... Read moreI really had high hopes for the Cran-Merry Refresher, especially with its festive name! The idea of a cranberry and orange drink sounds so appealing for the holidays. But wow, it just didn't hit right for me. The 'splash of green tea' I added didn't help, and honestly, the cranberry inclusions were a major turn-off. They had a strange texture that just didn't blend well with the drink. It felt like I was chewing on something unexpected, and not in a good way. I've seen some people try it without the inclusions, or even ask for different fruit bases, and I wonder if that would make a difference. It's a shame because visually, it's quite pretty – a vibrant red, exactly what you'd expect for a holiday drink. But flavor-wise, it was a definite no-go for me. Has anyone else felt this way about the inclusions?
Then there was the Gingerbread Oatmilk Chai. Now, I love a good gingerbread cookie, and the thought of it in a latte, especially with oat milk, was so enticing. My experience with this one was also disappointing. The layered appearance with foam and cinnamon dusting looked promising, just like in the ads! But when I took a sip, I was left wishing for more 'gingerbread' and less 'just cinnamon.' It didn't have that warm, spicy, slightly sweet kick I associate with gingerbread. Instead, it tasted like a regular chai with a bit more cinnamon, and as I mentioned, Starbucks chai often has a peculiar aftertaste for me that I just can't get past. I was hoping the gingerbread flavor would mask it, but alas, it didn't. I'm curious if those who love Starbucks' regular chai found this one more enjoyable? Perhaps my taste buds just aren't built for their chai base, but I've had amazing gingerbread lattes elsewhere that truly capture the essence of the season.
So, after these two misses, I'm already planning my next Starbucks holiday drink adventure, hopefully with better luck! If you're also feeling let down by these new additions, maybe try sticking to some tried-and-true classics or even some modifications. For a festive chai, perhaps adding a pump of a different syrup like caramel or even a white mocha to a regular chai could elevate it without that weird aftertaste. Or, for a cranberry fix, maybe a black tea infused with dried cranberries and a touch of orange zest could be a DIY win at home. I've also heard some people customize their refreshers significantly, adding different juices or less of the base. It makes me wonder if there's a 'secret menu' hack to make the Cran-Merry Refresher actually taste good! I might have to experiment with adding a different fruit juice or even sparkling water to cut through whatever I didn't like.
