There are many ways God can speak to you. He is never limited in his way of speaking to you.
But what you want to get used to as a believer is having a track record of knowing his voice. The best way I have learned to have a track record with God is…drumroll 🥁
FASTING
the biblical definition of fasting is abstaining from food for a certain amount of time. It can begin with as little as not eating for 5 hours and only drinking water.
As your relationship with God increases He WILL lead you to fast more. Why? John 4:34 speaks about the disciples asking if Jesus had eaten yet and he said, I have food or meat in the KJV that you do not know of. That his food is to do the will of God. Meaning he was fasting for the purpose of bringing the spiritual relaitu of his prophecy to be manifest in earth.
So in some instances for us to see prayers manifest or answered we do need to turn down eating for a certain amount of time because the Kingdom of God is different than the world we live in.
How fasting helps us hear God’s voice:
When you’re fasting, you’re humbling yourself before God making yourself uterly reliant on him to be the sustenance of energy.
When we fast and we are no longer being controlled by anger from fasting or pride or the things that come up when we are fasting God will actually speak a lot clearer to us when we are fasting.
Our spirit will KNOW. It will just be obvious to us. His Word will come alive when we are reading it. Even signs miracles and wonders will become louder. And he will begin creating a pattern of how he speaks to YOU.

Before you even start, pray about your intentions. What specific areas do you want clarity on? Ask God to speak to you. This sets the stage mentally and spiritually. During the fast itself, it's not just about abstaining; it's about filling that time with spiritual nourishment. The OCR mentions "reading our Bible" and states that "the best way that you're gonna hear God's voice is literally by reading the Bible." I've found this to be profoundly true. When my body is humbling itself, my spirit becomes more sensitive to the Word. I spend extra time in scripture, journaling my thoughts, and simply sitting in quiet contemplation, allowing space for Him to impress thoughts or insights on my heart. This is where you might "hear God more clearly" in a way that resonates deep within your spirit. Consider different types of fasts too. While abstaining from food is powerful, sometimes a partial fast (like a Daniel Fast, focusing on fruits, vegetables, and water) or even a "media fast" (giving up social media, TV, or entertainment) can create similar spiritual space. The goal is to remove distractions and create hunger—not just physical, but spiritual—for God. One of the biggest challenges I faced was distinguishing His voice. When you feel a prompting, ask yourself: Does this align with scripture? Does it bring peace? Does it draw me closer to God or others? Does it sound like love, joy, patience, kindness? The enemy's voice often brings fear, confusion, or condemnation. Your own thoughts can be logical but lack spiritual weight. But as the OCR notes, "he'll be able to speak to your spirit differently to the point where you know that you know that you know that it's him." That inner knowing, that peace that transcends understanding, is often a hallmark of His presence. Finally, remember that hearing God's voice is part of an ongoing relationship. Fasting is a tool to deepen that relationship, not a magic formula. Continue to pray, read your Bible regularly, and seek opportunities to serve. These practices keep your spiritual ears open and help you maintain the clarity you gain during your fast. It’s about building a consistent lifestyle of listening and responding to Him.
