Becoming a dog walker amid the COVID-19 pandemic has been a unique and rewarding journey for me. Initially, I took on dog walking just to pass the time during quarantines and lockdowns when most activities were paused. However, it soon became much more than a pastime — it turned into a source of motivation and emotional support. Walking dogs daily allowed me to stay active and connected with nature, which was vital for mental well-being during the isolation period. Each dog's personality added joy and variety to my routine, making each walk an uplifting experience. Moreover, spending time outdoors helped me cope with the stress and uncertainty of the pandemic. Beyond physical benefits, dog walking led me to build a small community with pet owners and fellow walkers. These interactions, often brief but meaningful, provided a sense of belonging and support. Listening to my clients’ stories and sharing mine helped reduce feelings of loneliness. Financially, dog walking gave me a flexible source of income when other jobs were scarce, helping me stay afloat during economic hardship. It was challenging at times—managing difficult dogs, bad weather, or scheduling—but the rewards far outweighed these difficulties. Ultimately, if I hadn’t become a dog walker during COVID, my life would have felt much more depressing and disconnected. This experience taught me the value of adaptability and human-animal bonds, which continue to enrich my life even as conditions improve.
