Last year I met a trainer who felt obedience was more important than regulating the dogs nervous system. It caused major divide in my community. The trainer set out to euthanize my dog. After rushing the med trial and trying to claim her certificates gave her the authority. I fought HARD for this dog. Not against the cull, the shelter but the rescue who was supposed to rescue her. They used her puppies and wanted to discard the inconvenience. I am a foster not a “I can’t let them go” type person. I’ve fostered 28 litters and countless adults. I did not want this dog but I didn’t want them to kill her more

I have personally witnessed how focusing solely on obedience without addressing underlying anxiety or neurological stress can lead to adverse outcomes. Dog trainers sometimes emphasize obedience as a cure-all, but this overlooks the emotional and psychological well-being that directly impacts behavior. By prioritizing nervous system regulation techniques—such as gentle handling, consistent routines, and positive reinforcement—the dog's trust and calmness improved dramatically, eventually leading to a successful adoption. This story highlights the systemic issues within some rescue and shelter organizations where puppies or adult dogs may be undervalued if they are deemed inconvenient. As fosters, we become vital advocates. Our role is not only to provide temporary homes but also to champion these animals, especially when institutional actions threaten their lives. Reflecting on the memory of meeting such dogs, often marked by their resilience despite hardship, I find that every foster journey strengthens my belief that saving lives requires patience, education, and relentless advocacy.
