The Honeys (Review)

⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 / 5

La Sala does it yet again. I think I'm going to have (fictional) beef with him with every book I read from him, lol. What a beautifully horrifying mystery 😢 I can not get over the imagery crafted through this story as we follow Mars trying to solve the essential murder of his sister while exploring the fluidity of gender. Super metaphorical and thought-provoking with an interesting ending.

... Read moreI honestly went into "The Honeys" by Ryan La Sala not knowing what to expect beyond an intriguing title, and let me tell you, I was completely swept away. This book is far more than just a mystery; it’s a beautifully crafted descent into psychological horror that genuinely unsettled me, in the best possible way. From the moment I started, I felt an almost palpable sense of unease, as if the summer camp setting, which seems idyllic on the surface, was hiding something truly sinister. The premise revolves around Mars, who takes his deceased twin sister Caroline’s place at the exclusive, all-girls summer camp, "Aspen Conservancy," to uncover the truth behind her mysterious death. What he finds there are the "Honeys," a clique of seemingly perfect girls who embody beauty and grace, but beneath their polished exterior lies a chilling secret. The tagline from the book cover, "Sometimes the darkest secrets lurk in broad daylight," couldn't be more fitting. La Sala masterfully builds an atmosphere where you constantly question what's real and what's a hallucination, blurring the lines between grief, identity, and a very real danger. It felt like I was right there with Mars, navigating the unsettling rituals and strange occurrences at the camp, always looking over my shoulder. One of the most striking aspects for me was how the narrative seamlessly weaves in themes of gender fluidity and identity. Mars’s journey of discovering himself, while simultaneously investigating his sister's murky past, adds such a profound layer to the story. His exploration of his own gender identity isn't just a side plot; it's intricately tied to his perception of the world around him and his understanding of belonging. It made me reflect on societal expectations and the pressures young people face to conform, especially in exclusive environments. The "BEE KIND" motif, perhaps ironically, kept coming to mind as I thought about the community these girls formed and the unspoken rules that governed them. La Sala’s writing is simply captivating. He paints vivid, almost dreamlike (or nightmare-like) imagery that makes the story incredibly immersive. The prose is rich and lyrical, carrying you through the suspenseful plot twists and the poignant moments of self-discovery. It’s a book that demands your attention, not just for the mystery, but for the depth of its characters and the questions it poses about what it means to be human, to grieve, and to find your true self amidst chaos. The ending, without giving anything away, is truly thought-provoking and leaves you pondering long after you've turned the last page. It’s not a neat, tied-up ending, which I personally appreciate in a mystery of this kind. I would highly recommend "The Honeys" to anyone looking for a unique young adult mystery that pushes boundaries. If you enjoy psychological thrillers with a strong thematic core, queer representation, and writing that makes you feel every emotion alongside the protagonist, then this is definitely a book you should add to your reading list. It’s more than just a summer camp horror story; it’s a commentary on identity, secrets, and the terrifying beauty of finding yourself.
