Tragically Hardwood Guitar Stand
I knew this piece was going to challenge me, but I didn’t realize just how far I’d push myself as a maker. Every single element of this guitar stand forced me to level up
I didn’t just pick new wood species, I had to figure out how to make them work together. I used my scroll saw in ways I’d never tried before. I designed parts that had never been done quite like this. Fingertips were the price to pay, haha.
But honestly? I loved it. Having full creative freedom meant I had to chase ideas that scared me a little. I always end up pushing myself when the reins are off, and this piece is proof of what happens when I follow that spark.

Working with multiple hardwood species like poplar, walnut, red oak, padauk, and rosewood was both exciting and challenging. I had to carefully balance their different properties to ensure a cohesive structure. Learning new scroll saw techniques helped me bring intricate details to life, such as the feather made from six wood types to honor Gord Downie. The creative freedom I enjoyed meant experimenting beyond my usual process. I designed unique parts that demanded precision and patience, often sacrificing fingertips in the process! These challenges pushed me to develop new skills and broaden my artistic approach. Locally sourcing all materials from a trusted supplier in Kingston connected me deeper to the community and environment. It felt important to use Canadian hardwoods when paying tribute to Canadian music royalty. For anyone interested in functional art or woodworking, this project shows how combining creativity with craftsmanship can produce something truly special. Challenges are inevitable but embracing them leads to growth and incredible results. Whether making guitar stands or other projects, growing through experimentation is so rewarding personally and artistically.
