There are so many examples of this where people are surprised that their arbitrary vibes based critiques of people turn into bigotry and we should stop being surprised at the very least
In my experience observing various online communities, I've noticed that labeling content or individuals as "cringe" often serves as a veil for deeper biases, sometimes unconscious, that align with societal bigotries. This critique usually goes beyond harmless teasing and taps into entrenched prejudices such as misogyny, transphobia, and fatphobia, reflecting the dominant attitudes of the society we live in. It's important to recognize that in patriarchal and fatphobic cultures, what is deemed "cringe" often targets those who challenge or exist outside traditional norms. For example, transgender individuals, women displaying non-conforming behavior, or people with diverse body types are disproportionately labeled as cringe, perpetuating harmful stereotypes and exclusion. From a political standpoint, simply reacting to vibes or subjective feelings about someone's behavior rarely leads to genuine progress. True progressive discourse tends to be grounded in logical analysis and aims to dismantle systemic power dynamics rather than merely calling out superficial discomforts. When critique is based primarily on emotional or arbitrary 'vibes,' it risks replicating the very oppressive structures it might intend to challenge. Therefore, when engaging in social commentary, especially about cringe culture, I find it crucial to reflect on the underlying biases that may be influencing my perspective. Actively counteracting these biases and striving for politically conscious content helps ensure critiques do not unknowingly reinforce bigotry. Ultimately, this means moving away from surface-level judgments and investing in content that seeks to understand context, power relations, and systemic inequalities. Calling out problematic behavior is necessary, but it must be done thoughtfully and with an awareness of the broader social implications to avoid perpetuating the cycle of bigotry inherent in patriarchal and transphobic societies.
