VFT progress (day after transplantation)

This is just a quick Venus Flytrap update.

It seems as though her traps are opening back up! I felt terrible at how I set all of them off during the process of transplanting and really beat myself up about it. 😭 There’s hope for us yet, it seems. I’m thinking of putting a gnome on her. 👀Probably a bad idea though, right?

This might be the start of a carnivorous plant addiction or just another layer of trauma to add to the pie. Stay tuned.

... Read moreSeeing my Venus Flytrap's traps finally opening back up after its big move has been such a relief! If you're like me and have been wondering 'how to transplant a Venus Flytrap' or what to expect, trust me, it can be a bit nerve-wracking. I totally set off most of its traps during the process, and I was convinced I'd traumatized my poor plant! But seeing it bounce back so quickly has taught me a lot about these amazing carnivorous beauties. So, you've got a Venus Flytrap and it's getting too big for its pot, or maybe the soil is looking a bit tired? That's usually the sign it's time for a transplant. I’ve learned that the best time to do this is during its dormancy period, typically in late winter or early spring, right before new growth starts. This minimizes the shock. If you have to do it outside this window, like I did, just be extra gentle! First things first: the right soil. This is crucial! Venus Flytraps are super particular. They need nutrient-poor, acidic soil. Forget regular potting mix – that's a death sentence for them. I use a mix of sphagnum peat moss (make sure it doesn't have added fertilizers!) and perlite, usually a 1:1 ratio. Some people use horticultural sand instead of perlite. The key is excellent drainage and no added nutrients. Next, choose your pot. They like deep pots because they have long root systems. Plastic pots are generally better than terracotta as terracotta can leach minerals. Make sure it has drainage holes! When I transplanted my VFT, I made sure the new pot was just a size larger than the old one, giving its roots a bit more room without overwhelming it. Now for the actual transplanting. This is where I got a bit anxious! Gently remove your Venus Flytrap from its old pot. I tried to keep as much of the old soil around the roots as possible to lessen the shock. If the roots are really compacted, you can carefully loosen them, but try not to disturb them too much. Place the plant in the new pot, centering it, and then carefully fill around the roots with your fresh peat/perlite mix. Don't press the soil down too hard – you want it to be airy. After potting, give it a good watering with distilled water or rainwater. Tap water is a no-go for VFTs due to minerals. This helps settle the soil and provides much-needed moisture. You might notice, like I did, that the traps close up. Don't panic! This is a completely normal stress response. My potted Venus Flytrap looked pretty sad for a day or two, with most of its traps closed, just like the 'YESTERDAY' picture I shared. The recovery period is all about patience. Keep the soil consistently moist (but not waterlogged) with distilled water, and give it plenty of bright, indirect sunlight. Avoid direct, harsh afternoon sun for a few days immediately post-transplant, but they do need good light overall. Within a few days to a week, you should start seeing signs of recovery, just like my plant showing its traps opening up in the 'TODAY' photo! It's such a rewarding feeling to see your plant thrive after you've given it a new home. This whole experience has definitely deepened my appreciation for these unique plants – and maybe, just maybe, it's the start of my own carnivorous plant addiction!
