on words with friends really?

2024/12/18 Edited to

... Read moreOkay, so I just had to share this wild experience I had playing Words With Friends. You know how sometimes you get chat messages from strangers? Well, this one quickly escalated from a friendly 'Where are you playing from?' to something that gave me major oof😬 vibes. I replied, innocently enough, something like 'Uk here,' and the very next message was, 'Have u got WhatsApp?' Seriously?! My internal alarm bells started ringing like crazy. What really caught my attention, and honestly, gave me a bit of a scare, was when a 'Risk Detected' warning popped up from Zynga itself! It advised caution about moving to another app, which validated exactly what I was feeling. It's like the game knew what was happening, and it was trying to protect me. I immediately thought, 'no way,' and decided not to engage. But then, they pushed further, asking, 'Would you like to chat on the phone?' At that point, I was just thinking, 'gross,' and knew I had to share this. This isn't just about a creepy interaction; it's about online safety. These kinds of interactions, where someone tries to quickly move you off the game's platform to another messaging app like WhatsApp or asks for your phone number, are classic scam tactics. Scammers want to get you into a less monitored environment where they can try to extract personal information, money, or even gain your trust for more elaborate schemes. They might start by being overly friendly, complimenting your game, or talking about personal struggles to build rapport. Then, they'll suggest moving the conversation, claiming it's easier, or they don't use the in-game chat much. My advice? Trust your gut. If a chat 'gets' weird, suspicious, or uncomfortable, it probably is. Never share personal details like your full name, address, financial information, or even your phone number or WhatsApp ID with strangers you meet in online games. If you get a 'Risk Detected' warning, take it seriously! It's there for a reason. Here’s what I always do if a chat turns sour: Don't engage: Stop replying immediately. Block the user: Most apps have a block feature. Use it! Report them: Use the in-game reporting tools. This helps the platform identify and remove scammers, protecting other players. Stay on the platform: Resist any pressure to move the conversation to another app or give out your personal contact info. If they insist, it's a huge red flag. It's a shame that a fun game like Words With Friends can be used for these kinds of predatory behaviors, but being aware is our best defense. Let's all keep our online gaming experiences fun and safe, and remember to say a collective brother ewww to anyone trying to pull these stunts!
