Rockefeller Center | Things to do in NYC

Rockefeller Center

There is so much to do at 1 Rockefeller Plaza . Yep even in the summer ! You can walk around and just take in the sights. You can shop till you drop ! (I mean there’s amazing stores like FAO Shwartz and American Doll) or you can stop at any of the super cool eateries !

There are even events that are hosted here! Some are even free. Definitely check out the website to see what’s going on !

... Read moreYou know, when I first thought of Rockefeller Center, I pictured it mostly around the holidays with the tree and ice skating. But let me tell you, this place is an absolute gem year-round, especially in the summer! I recently spent a day exploring, and I was genuinely surprised by just how much there is to do, see, and experience, making it a must-visit in NYC. Beyond just walking around and soaking in the vibrant atmosphere, which is a joy in itself, the shopping here is incredible. Of course, you have iconic spots like FAO Schwarz. Stepping inside is like entering a magical toy kingdom, not just for kids but for anyone who loves toys and nostalgia. Remember the giant piano from the movie *Big*? Yep, it's there! And it’s not just toys; you'll find unique gifts and keepsakes. Then there's American Girl, a dream for many, and plenty of other high-end and interesting boutiques, like the illuminated storefronts I saw one evening. You could easily spend hours just browsing. But let's talk about the food! Rockefeller Center is brimming with "super cool eateries," as the original post mentioned. From quick bites to sit-down meals, you'll find something to satisfy any craving. I particularly loved finding an outdoor dining area with striped umbrellas – perfect for people-watching on a sunny day. Whether you're looking for a gourmet coffee, a hearty lunch, or a sweet treat, the options are endless. And the events! It’s true, they host so many different things. During my visit, I saw signs for "Summer at the Rink," which transformed the famous ice-skating spot into a vibrant roller rink or an open-air common space. It's fantastic how they repurpose the space throughout the seasons. Many events are even free, which is a huge bonus! Always check their official website before you go – you might catch a live performance, a market, or a special art installation. One of my absolute favorite experiences was seeing Rockefeller Center at night. The nighttime view is absolutely breathtaking. The illuminated main building stands out against the dark sky, creating a truly magical ambiance. It's a completely different vibe than during the day – more serene yet still incredibly lively. If you get a chance, definitely try to catch the night skyline view from a vantage point nearby, or even from within the plaza, it’s stunning. Beyond the glitz and glam, there's also a rich history embedded in the architecture. I noticed a historical plaque while strolling through one of the gardens, detailing the vision of John D. Rockefeller, Jr. and the incredible architects who brought this urban masterpiece to life. It gives you a deeper appreciation for the thought and effort that went into creating this iconic destination. The blend of art, commerce, and public space is truly unique. So whether you’re planning a trip to NYC, looking for something fun to do in the summer, or just want to explore an iconic landmark, Rockefeller Center truly has it all. Don't limit your visit to just the holiday season; the summer fun, the diverse shopping, the amazing food, and especially the night views make it an unforgettable experience any time of year! It's a place where there's always something new to discover.
