Williamsburg Bridge | Things to Do in NYC

Williamsburg Bridge

This is my favorite bridge to walk across ! It’s usually not super crowded. You get amazing views of the city.

It is super accessible. Tons of buses and trains go there. You can take the j/m/z to Marcy Av to walk from Brooklyn. Or you can take the j/m/z/f to Delancey St & Essex St to walk from the manhattan side.

There are designated walking and bike lanes. & it is separate from car traffic. So you can feel safe and secure on your walk .

It is fun for the whole family. This is definitely one of the best free things to do in NYC this summer !

... Read moreHey fellow NYC explorers! If you're looking for an unforgettable experience that won't cost a dime, I absolutely have to tell you about my recent adventure walking the Williamsburg Bridge. It's often overshadowed by its more famous sibling, the Brooklyn Bridge, but trust me, this bridge has its own unique charm and incredible perks! Unlike some other bridges, the Williamsburg Bridge offers a more serene and less crowded experience, making it my personal favorite for a peaceful stroll or an energetic bike ride. The best part? The panoramic views of the captivating Manhattan skyline, vibrant Brooklyn, and the glistening East River are absolutely breathtaking. It truly feels like a hidden gem right in the heart of the city. One of the things I love most is how incredibly accessible it is. Whether you're coming from Manhattan or Brooklyn, getting to the bridge is a breeze. From Manhattan: I usually head towards Delancey Street & Essex Street. You can catch the J, M, Z, or F trains directly there. Once you exit, it's just a short walk to the bridge's main entrance. Keep an eye out for the distinct stone archway you might have seen in some photos – that’s your gateway to incredible views! For cyclists, the bike route entrance is clearly marked and easy to spot, providing a smooth transition from the street view to the bridge path. From Brooklyn: If you're starting your journey from the Brooklyn side, the Marcy Av station (J, M, Z trains) is your best bet. From there, it's a straightforward path up to the bridge. You'll find clear signs for both the pedestrian path and the dedicated bike lane, making it super easy to find your way onto the designated path. What truly sets the Williamsburg Bridge apart is its thoughtful design for pedestrians and cyclists. There are completely separate, designated walking and bike lanes, meaning you don't have to constantly dodge bikes if you're on foot, or vice-versa. This separation, often highlighted by overhead signs like 'KEEP LEFT RIGHT' for different traffic, really enhances the safety and enjoyment of your crossing. You'll feel secure knowing you're away from car traffic, even when you see the busy street views leading up to the bridge. I've walked it countless times, and each time, I discover something new. It’s perfect for a leisurely stroll, a brisk walk, or even a run! The gentle incline and decline make for a good workout with an amazing backdrop. If you're into cycling, the bike route is incredibly smooth and offers a fantastic ride across the East River. It’s truly fun for the whole family, and honestly, one of the best free things to do in NYC, especially during the summer. Don't forget your camera – the photo opportunities, with the city as your backdrop, are endless! Tips for Your Visit: Best Time to Go: Early mornings or late afternoons offer beautiful light and generally fewer people. Sunset views from the bridge are absolutely spectacular! What to Bring: Comfortable shoes are a must for walking. A water bottle, sunglasses, and of course, your phone for capturing those amazing photos are highly recommended. Duration: A full walk across and back can take anywhere from 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on your pace and how many times you stop for photos. Biking is, of course, quicker, but still worth savoring the journey. So next time you're in NYC, skip the crowded tourist traps and experience the authentic charm and incredible views of the Williamsburg Bridge. It's a truly rewarding experience!
