Procrastinating once again!

2024/10/23 Edited to

... Read moreI totally get it! That feeling of having a deadline looming for a creative project, knowing you have ample time, but somehow, the days just slip away until you're staring at the clock with mere hours left. It's a classic #collegestudent struggle, isn't it? My own sketchbook is filled with stories of last-minute inspiration – or rather, last-minute panic that somehow sparks a burst of creativity. It's fascinating how many of us creatives, especially those of us who love to draw, fall into this procrastination trap. We might have a week to complete a detailed pencil landscape drawing, but we spend days overthinking, getting distracted, or waiting for the 'perfect' moment. For me, sometimes it's the sheer overwhelm of starting a big piece, like depicting a complex scene with a house, trees, a winding path, and mountains. Other times, it's the fear that my vision won't translate perfectly onto the page. That blank sketchbook page can be incredibly intimidating! But then, something magical happens when the pressure is on. That adrenaline kicks in, and suddenly, ideas flow, focus sharpens, and what seemed impossible just hours before starts to take shape. It’s like our brains decide, "Okay, no more time for perfectionism; let's just do it!" And surprisingly often, these last-minute creations, like a spontaneous black and white pencil landscape drawing, turn out to be some of our most authentic and expressive pieces. There's a raw energy to them that might be lost if we had endless hours to fuss over every detail. While the thrill of a last-minute success is undeniable, constantly relying on it can be stressful. Over time, I've tried to implement a few tricks to keep procrastination at bay without stifling my creative flow. One thing that helps immensely is breaking down big projects. Instead of thinking "I need to draw a whole landscape," I'll tell myself, "Today, I'll just sketch the basic outline of the house and trees" or "I'll focus on the mountains and clouds." Small, manageable steps make the task feel less daunting. Another personal favorite is setting non-negotiable "creation slots." Even if it's just 30 minutes, dedicating that time to my art, whether it's working on a detailed pencil drawing or just doodling, helps build momentum. Sometimes, the hardest part is just starting. Once the pencil hits the paper, and I see that initial sketch of a winding path or the sun/moon emerging, I often find myself wanting to continue. And let's be honest, sometimes we simply need to accept that 'good enough' is, well, good enough. Not every piece has to be a masterpiece. The goal is to enjoy the process and express ourselves. Seeing your landscape drawing, with its beautiful details like the house, trees, winding path, and mountains, come together despite the last-minute rush, is incredibly rewarding. It’s a testament to your skill and quick thinking! So, to all my fellow Lemon8 creatives out there who've pulled off a masterpiece (or a pretty darn good piece!) at the eleventh hour, I salute you. Sharing these experiences not only makes us feel less alone in our struggles but also celebrates the unique ways our creativity manifests. Keep creating, keep sharing, and sometimes, keep procrastinating – as long as the art *still comes out*!
