... Read moreDealing with mommy issues can often feel like riding an emotional rollercoaster, full of conflicting feelings that range from deep gratitude to intense frustration. It’s common for those of us who have experienced difficult or unfair responsibilities in childhood—especially as eldest daughters—to wrestle with mixed emotions as we grow older. Sometimes, we feel pride in the strength and emotional intelligence we've developed through those struggles, while at other times, we grapple with anger and sadness for the younger versions of ourselves. From my own experience, what stands out is the complexity of these emotions existing simultaneously. There’s a sort of bittersweet appreciation for how past hardships shaped us—giving us confidence and resilience—yet also an acknowledgment that certain struggles shouldn’t have been borne alone or at all. This dual awareness can be confusing, but it also opens pathways to healing. One useful approach I’ve found is recognizing that these feelings don’t need to be resolved or defined by a single word or label. It’s okay to feel grateful for the growth and angry about the circumstances. Writing down your thoughts or sharing them in a supportive community can help in processing these emotions. It also serves as a reminder that we are not alone in these experiences. Building emotional intelligence and confidence from such challenges often comes from setting boundaries, practicing self-care, and forgiving both ourselves and others for past hardships. It can help to reflect on how you’ve overcome past difficulties and celebrate the ways they’ve contributed to your personal development. This doesn’t minimize the hurt but acknowledges your power in rising above it. If you resonate with this, know that it’s normal to have days filled with conflicting feelings. The journey through mommy issues is not linear but layered with growth, setbacks, understanding, and self-compassion. Embracing this complexity can be part of the healing process that leads to a more peaceful and empowered self.
