Toying With A New Set-Up For Events
My book display is out-growing my 6’ table, so I figured it was time to find an alternative. My first thought was bookshelf. Then I thought about hauling around a shelf, putting it up, taking it down, and thought there must be a better way. Wooden crates are my current solution. I figured I can zip tie them together and cut them apart at the end of the day. I may even be able to bungee or zip tie to my table leg for stability.
It’s still a bit tall, and I think I’ll eventually have to do some sort of shelf situation and an itsy bitsy table. I haven’t been able to find a small folding table I like either. I also don’t want to take up more space. (Being compact saves you money in booth space costs!) I also like to sell a few crafts for lower price points/draw attention such as bookmarks, books sleeves, and book fairies (phasing those out because I can’t find all the items I need to create them anymore) (also looking to replace the fairies with Impkin reading buddies… trying to create a decent pattern to make them books to hold!)

Zip ties are fantastic for connecting crates to each other and even to your table legs. I've also found that placing heavier books or weights at the bottom-most crates helps immensely. For added peace of mind, a non-slip mat under your main table can prevent everything from shifting. No one wants a book avalanche! Next, maximizing visual appeal and accessibility. The beauty of a multi-level display, like with crates, is that you can create different zones. Higher levels are great for featuring new releases or spotlighting specific series like 'Worlds War' or 'Freaks.' Eye-level is prime real estate for your bestsellers or books you want to move quickly. And don't forget the lower levels for children's books or clearance items. Make sure your titles are always facing forward, easy to read, and that customers can comfortably pick up books without dislodging everything. I often use small, clear acrylic stands inside the crates to prop up a featured book. Beyond just books, many of us sell complementary merchandise—think bookmarks, book sleeves, or even those adorable Impkin reading buddies I'm trying to perfect! Instead of just scattering them, designate a specific, well-lit area. Small, tiered stands or even another mini crate on its side can beautifully display these items. This not only makes your table look more professional but also encourages impulse buys. For crafting items, clear pricing is a must! Finally, transportation and quick setup/teardown are crucial for event day survival. Look for lightweight, collapsible tables if you can. For crates, consider lining them with fabric or felt to protect your books during transit. Pack a 'go-bag' with essentials: scissors for zip ties, pricing gun, extra pens, business cards, and a small first-aid kit. The smoother your setup, the more energy you'll have to connect with readers. Remember, your display isn't just about selling; it's about creating an inviting experience that reflects your brand and story. Happy selling!
