Starting from Tokyo to Nagano, visiting the historic Zenkōji Temple was peaceful and spiritually uplifting. A day trip to Togakushi Shrine felt like stepping back in time, surrounded by ancient forest trails. Kamikochi, open from late April to mid-November, provided refreshing mountain views and tranquil hiking paths, perfect for nature lovers.
Matsumoto was a delightful blend of history and local culture. Exploring Matsumoto Castle gave me a window into feudal Japan, while Nakamachi Dori and Nawate street offered charming architecture and unique artisan crafts. Sampling local treats like wasabi from Daio Wasabi Farm and wandering through preserved post towns like Narai-juku added a nostalgic feel to the journey.
The Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine Route was a highlight. Taking in the alpine scenery, especially during its open season, was stunning. Transitioning to Toyama and Takaoka introduced me to Doraemon's hometown and the Manga Road, where nostalgic characters from classic anime brought out a sense of childhood wonder. Local seafood at Toyama Bay and Toyama black ramen were both delicious culinary experiences.
Visiting the UNESCO World Heritage sites Gokayama and Shirakawa-go was like entering a fairytale with their traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses surrounded by lush landscapes. Don’t miss tasting the renowned Hida beef here, a treat for meat lovers.
The serene Onsen towns, Unazaki and nearby Gero Onsen, offered perfect relaxation after busy sightseeing days. Riding the Kurobe Gorge Valley Train back to Tokyo was a scenic way to close the trip, passing through dramatic river valleys and deeply forested mountains.
Throughout the trip, I appreciated how each location had something unique to offer, from rich history and architecture to memorable food and natural beauty. Central Japan’s blend of tradition and nature makes it an extraordinary destination for solo travelers seeking an authentic and immersive Japanese experience.
