What travelling has taught me about patriotism

... Read moreTraveling truly offers a unique lens through which you learn to appreciate your own country in ways that daily life may not reveal. One realization I had while abroad was the immense privilege embedded within the Singaporean passport. Being able to travel freely without the hassle of strenuous visa applications or travel bans is something many take for granted. This opened my eyes to the importance of recognizing and appreciating the foundational systems that make such freedom possible. Another profound aspect of patriotism I discovered was the joy of sharing Singaporean culture internationally, even in small, imperfect ways. For example, while celebrating Lunar New Year overseas, my friends and I concocted a makeshift Yu Sheng using whatever local ingredients were available. Though it wasn’t authentic, sharing this tradition sparked connection and curiosity, reinforcing how patriotism includes spreading your homeland’s warmth and stories, fostering cross-cultural understanding. Respecting other cultures while traveling also shaped my view of representing Singapore. Simple gestures like greeting locals in their language or observing local customs demonstrate respect and goodwill, reflecting positively on Singapore. It reminded me that our actions abroad influence how others perceive our country and that being a considerate traveler is part of patriotic pride. Moreover, the daily comforts and safety I often overlook—such as affordable kopi, reliable utilities, and feeling safe walking at night—became more precious after seeing contrasting realities elsewhere. These small conveniences constitute a significant part of what makes Singapore home, underscoring the value of appreciating even the seemingly mundane aspects. Lastly, traveling taught me that no country is flawless. Each nation, including Singapore, has its unique strengths and challenges. This awareness fosters a balanced patriotism that admires the good while acknowledging areas for improvement, inspiring hope and effort for progress rather than blind pride. In essence, traveling shaped a richer, more nuanced patriotism for me—one that celebrates privilege, shares culture, acts respectfully, appreciates everyday blessings, and embraces honest self-reflection. These lessons make me proud to call Singapore home and motivated to contribute positively to its future.

You could plan and execute but sometimes, you would need some help along the way. My one month travelling (3weeks in Switzerland and 5 days in Lyon ) could not be possible without people helping along the way. Thank you local for helping me take photo. 谢谢中国朋友在Jungfraujoch 为我拍照~ 사진 찍는데,감사합니다!

solo travel taught me independence, but it also came with lessons i learnt the hard way. from over-planning my days to delaying medical care and saying yes to things i didn’t truly want, these experiences reminded me to slow down and take better care of myself while travelling alone. ✈️ if y

✨ Things I Learned While Solo Travelling in My 20s
I used to think solo travel was scary — but honestly, it became the most healing thing I’ve ever done for myself. Here are the little lessons I learned along the way: 1. It’s okay to enjoy your own company. I realised I don’t always need someone beside me to feel safe or happy. Quiet breakfa

How Paris changed my attitude towards life 🇫🇷

Why I LOVE solo travelling as a girl
I never imagined solo travel would shape my life the way it has. What started off as a personal challenge turned into a journey of growth, connection, and deep self-discovery. I took my first solo trip after someone I dated once told me, “You’re still living in your bubble.” He didn’t mean it in

Are we travelling to see the world or ourselves?
Honestly growing up in an Asian household, travelling is the closest moving out experiment you get other than the fact that if you’re lucky enough to get married… and that’s why we’re all addicted to travelling. While all the other parts of our life seems out of control, at least we can spend m

What does Travelling means to you? 🧳
Is it about ticking off places from a list 🗒, or is it about actually being there — breathing in the air, listening to the tiny sounds you only notice when you slow down, and letting a place leave a mark on you? Sometimes I catch myself so focused on getting the “perfect” photo that I forget to l
