Frennamy Test
February 17, 2026
Let’s continue this ongoing test to identify if someone in your life might be a friennamy.
Four Strong Examples:
• They gather personal information about you and later use it strategically.
• They act supportive until you no longer need their validation.
• They subtly celebrate when you fail but go quiet when you win.
• They resist your boundaries because access to you benefits them.

Navigating relationships can be tricky, especially when someone close to you exhibits behaviors of a frenemy. From my experience, recognizing these subtle but impactful signs early on can save you a lot of emotional distress. For instance, a person who gathers your personal information and later uses it against you isn’t truly supportive; they’re collecting ammo for potential manipulation. I've seen this happen with acquaintances who pretend to be friends but turn their knowledge of your vulnerabilities into leverage. Another common trait is when someone seems supportive only when they benefit from your achievements or validation, but turns distant the moment you become independent or no longer serve their needs. This kind of conditional support often leaves you feeling confused and undervalued. What’s more, frenemies tend to mask their true feelings by subtly rejoicing at your setbacks yet remaining silent when you succeed. Recognizing this pattern early helped me set boundaries with a coworker whose covert competitiveness undermined my confidence. Lastly, unhealthy relationships often involve boundary-pushing. When you try to establish limits, frenemies resist because their access benefits them personally. It’s crucial to uphold your boundaries firmly, as this protects your emotional space and maintains your wellbeing. By sharing these examples drawn from real-life encounters, I hope to help others identify these red flags. Understanding these behaviors not only aids in protecting your mental health but also empowers you to cultivate relationships based on genuine care and respect.
