Some medications deplet nutrients for some..

5/27 Edited to

... Read moreIn my own experience managing multiple medications, I realized the importance of understanding how they can affect nutrient levels. For example, Metformin, widely prescribed for diabetes, can significantly decrease Vitamin B12 absorption, leading to fatigue and nerve issues if unmonitored. Similarly, Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs), commonly used for acid reflux, reduce stomach acid essential for absorbing minerals like magnesium and calcium, which can impact bone strength over time. What helped me was consistently communicating with my healthcare provider about the possibility of nutrient depletion and getting regular blood tests to check levels of vitamins and minerals. Sometimes, simple dietary adjustments or supplements made a substantial difference. Another important aspect is how diuretics increase electrolyte loss, which is critical to monitor, especially in older adults or those with heart conditions. Since many people aren't aware that antibiotics and corticosteroids can also interfere with vitamin K and D absorption, respectively, education around these effects is key to preventing unexpected side effects like weaker bones or blood clotting issues. One practical approach is to maintain a nutrient-rich diet alongside medication management, focusing on foods high in key vitamins and minerals, such as leafy greens for folate and vitamin K, nuts and seeds for magnesium, and fatty fish for vitamin D and CoQ10. In conclusion, awareness and proactive management can greatly reduce the risk of nutrient deficiencies caused by long-term medication use. Always consult your healthcare provider before starting any supplements, as they can guide dosing and avoid interactions. This knowledge empowered me to take better control of my health and can help others stay proactive too.
