Old School Places to visit in NYC
Next time you’re traveling to New York, don’t miss these classic, old-school establishments to feel like you’re in ‘Old New York.’
P.J. Clarke's on Third Avenue
This spot dates back to 1884 and not only serves up a mean burger that Nat King Cole loved to order nicknamed the Cadillac, but has a very Old New York vibe complete with the red and white checkered table cloth, old wooden bar, and you can even sit in the booth that Frank Sinatra used to sit at!
You need to go to the Third Ave location for the real old-school vibes!
This Upper East Side cocktail lounge is a classic New York establishment at The Carlyle, A Rosewood Hotel.
Artist Ludwig Bemelmans (the artist of the beloved Madeline books) made a deal with the hotel manager where if he painted the walls of the lounge, him and his family could live in the hotel for free for 18 months!
The bar/lounge opened in 1947. And just like any cool old New York establishment, famous patrons included the likes of Frank Sinatra, JFK, Elizabeth Taylor, Paul McCartney, Harry Truman, and Robert DeNiro to name a few.
One of my favorite places in New York City for history, food, and drinks!
This is the oldest tavern in NYC dating back to 1762 in the Financial District.
Historic events took place here like when George Washington gave his farewell address to his Continental Army here in 1783.
The US Founding Fathers gathered here to make plans during the American Revolution.
This was the last place that Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr were seen in public before their infamous duel.
And there’s a museum here today! You can dine in the old dining room, but I prefer the tavern area! The Dingle Whisky area is also old-school too!
