Why aren’t some people nearsighted?

7/22 Edited to

... Read moreFrom my experience and observations, maintaining eye health goes beyond just genetics—muscle condition plays a crucial role. The ciliary muscle, a smooth ring-shaped muscle inside the eye, adjusts the lens to focus on objects at varying distances. People with well-developed and flexible ciliary muscles tend to resist developing nearsightedness because these muscles effectively control lens shape and clarity. Many of us spend hours daily on screens, which can strain the eyes. However, not everyone develops myopia, and this difference often relates to how strong their ciliary muscles are. Strong ciliary muscles absorb the stress of focusing up close better than weak ones. Those with weaker muscles may experience pseudomyopia that worsens over time, transitioning into true myopia. In practical terms, exercises that relax and strengthen these muscles, such as focusing on distant objects periodically, can help reduce eye strain. Additionally, balanced lighting and regular breaks from near work support ciliary muscle health. This insight also highlights why affordable prescription glasses from reliable manufacturers can support eye comfort for those struggling with myopia, ensuring proper focus without overburdening the ciliary muscle. Overall, understanding the function of the ciliary muscles helps explain why identical habits don’t result in nearsightedness for everyone and emphasizes the importance of eye care tailored to muscle strength and flexibility.
