Part 3️⃣ of my Vietnam Tour: Halong Bay 🏝🛳️

I spent two amazing weeks traveling the entire length of Vietnam, from the vibrant streets of Hanoi all the way down to the bustling energy of Ho Chi Minh City. And the best part? I did it with my parents, who are in their 50s and 60s—so if you’re planning a family trip, this itinerary might be just what you need!

Day 4️⃣ — Ha Long Bay Cruise Experience 🛥️

After a satisfying breakfast at our hotel, our chauffeur service picked us up and sent us straight to the pier. Once we checked in, we were welcomed onboard with a buffet lunch before setting sail on the Grand Pioneers 2D1N Cruise.

Our first stop wasSung Sot Cave, the largest cave in Ha Long Bay. The limestone karst formations were absolutely stunning, and our experienced guide shared many fascinating legends along the way. It was truly eye-opening — although it reminded me of similar cave systems I’ve seen in parts of China and other Asian countries.

Next, we headed to Ti Top Island. It was very crowded, but the climb was 100% worth it because the panoramic view from the top was breathtaking. After that, I went back to the cruise for a quick swim before getting ready for dinner.

Dinner was served in a fine-dining style and it exceeded expectations — beautifully plated and delicious. ✨

The night didn’t end there though! We enjoyed onboard activities like indoor golfing and squid fishing, which was honestly the most surreal and unique experience of the entire cruise. One of the passengers even caught a huge squid, making the moment feel extra special!

Day 5️⃣ — Kayaking into Nature 🌿

We started our morning early with a visit to Hang Luồn Cave, accessible only by small boats. I chose the kayaking option — and it was the best decision. Being able to paddle freely, explore at my own pace, and take in the peaceful surroundings made the experience unforgettable. I even spotted monkeys along the cliffs!

After this refreshing morning activity, we returned to the cruise for lunch, followed by our transfer back to the hotel.

Next stop: Phong Nha — The Kingdom of Caves 🏞️✨

... Read moreIf you're planning a Vietnam ship tour like ours, here are some tips to make the most of your Halong Bay experience. Booking a 2-day, 1-night cruise such as the Grand Pioneers offers a perfect balance between sightseeing and relaxation. Prioritize time for kayaking in Hang Luồn Cave — paddling at your own rhythm allows you to soak up the lush scenery and often spot wildlife like monkeys that live among the limestone cliffs. While Ti Top Island can be crowded, the climb is rewarding with stunning panoramic views that are worth the effort. I recommend taking your time and going early if possible to avoid peak crowds. Onboard dining exceeded expectations for me, with fresh and beautifully presented Vietnamese cuisine that highlights local flavors. Activities like squid fishing add a unique cultural touch to the cruise — watching other travelers catch squid creates memorable moments and a fun group atmosphere. For family trips especially, the combination of nature, adventure, and comfort onboard creates lasting memories for all ages. Finally, don’t hesitate to ask your guide about the fascinating local legends tied to the limestone karsts — it adds depth and context to the visual feast around you. This blend of natural beauty, cultural stories, and engaging activities made our Vietnam Halong Bay cruise truly special.

Hubby and i planned a LAST-MINUTE trip to Hanoi in December, and flight prices were skyrocketing. we felt forced to pull the trigger on a $350/pax one-way ticket given the peak season surges, and the whole experience was pure chaos. if you’re flying Vietnam Airlines with a short layover at Ho Ch
