There is no rest for the wicked. — Isaiah 57:20. Even this scripture is a picture of the mercy of God. Many read these words only as judgment, but hidden within them is the loving hand of a Father refusing to let His children destroy themselves in peace. When God has called you, marked you, loved you, and stretched out His hand toward you, He will not allow sin to satisfy your soul forever. The pleasure fades; the laughter becomes hollow; the bed becomes a place of torment; the mind races; conviction grows louder in the night. Why? Because mercy is chasing you. The prodigal son thought freedom would be found in rebellion, but the farther he wandered from the father’s house, the lower he sank. Scripture says he “began to be in want” (Luke 15:14). That lack was mercy. The famine was mercy. The brokenness was mercy. God allowed him to become so empty that he finally “came to himself.” Some of you are exhausted because you are fighting the call of God on your life. You are trying to silence conviction with relationships, substances, lust, entertainment, pride, money, or distractions, but the Spirit of God keeps dealing with you. You cannot rest in darkness when Heaven has called you into light. “The way of transgressors is hard.” — Proverbs 13:15. God never promised peace to rebellion, because if sin brought lasting peace, many would never return home. So in His mercy, He lets the emptiness speak. He lets the pigpen stink. He lets the soul become weary. Not because He hates you, but because He loves you too much to leave you bound. The enemy tells you that because you fell, God is finished with you. But the cross says otherwise. “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28. Notice that Jesus offers rest, because sin never could. Prodigal, the restlessness you feel is not proof God abandoned you. It is proof He is still calling you. The conviction you feel is evidence of His mercy. The tears, the emptiness, the sleepless nights, the aching conscience — these are not signs that He wants to destroy you. They are signs that He refuses to let you settle in chains. Come home. The Father is still watching the road. Repentance is not humiliation; it is rescue. There is still cleansing in the blood of Jesus. There is still freedom for the captive. There is still restoration for the broken. There is still peace for the weary soul that finally falls at His feet. The world says, “Follow your heart.” Jesus says, “Follow Me and live.” There is no rest for the wicked… but there is abundant mercy for the repentant.
